Scott Hurley, Luther College associate professor of religion, will discuss how classical Chinese cosmology links the health of individuals, the state and the cosmos, to the ability of each level to change and adapt at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall.
The lecture is titled "Corporal Wisdom, Embodied Compassion: the Dao (Way) of Change in a Time of Ideological Stagnation."
The sixth annual Knut Gjerset lecture will be presented by Bill Musser, librarian at Seed Savers Exchange, at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge of the Center for Faith and Life.
A rare event bringing together an artist and an art historian of international reputation will be held in Jewel Theatre at the Center for the Arts at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 8. This year's Gerhard Marcks Lecture features Julia Andrews of The Ohio State University engaging in dialogue with exhibiting artist Zheng Chongbin. In conjunction with the lecture, an exhibit of contemporary Chinese art "Don't Cry Over Spilt Ink" is on display in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery through April 24.
Opening receptions for the Little Author Portraits exhibit in the CFL gallery, Thursday April 7, 9:40-11 and 4-5. Tempera paintings by artist Mark Hoffmann include several portraits of authors from this year's Paideia syllabus. This exhibit is part of Lise Kildegaard's Jones Professor project. Join us for treats and activities, celebrating the imaginative worlds of great authors.
Dr. Steinar Bryn of the Nansen Peace and Dialogue Center (Lillehammer, Norway) will be on campus Monday, April 18. He will give a public lecture in the CRH at 4:00 entitled, "Peace Building and Dialogue: the Work of the Nansen Dialogue Network." A reception will follow in Qualley Lounge. Dr. Bryn has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize five times for his work in promoting dialogue in areas of ethnic and/or religious conflict. For information, contact Dr. Laurie Iudin-Nelson.
Up! Up! Film Festival. The Winneshiek Energy District and Seed Savers Exchange are co-hosting a 10 day film festival extravaganza from April 13-23 in Decorah. Up! Up! is a collection of independently produced films and shorts, each exploring questions of farmland access, rural livelihoods, and the sustainability of people and place.  Come see the amazing American Spiritual Ensemble, the critically-acclaimed operatic group! These artists blend historic American hymns and African rhythms, creating a musical juxtaposition of salvation and lamentation that resonates still today. The show is on April 7 at 7:30 p.m.in the Center for Faith and Life. The performance is presented in partnership with Classical Minnesota Public Radio. Tickets are free with CAF, $24 without. We will induct new members into the Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society and award two scholarships in memory of Don Kemp and Jessa Slostad. On Friday, April 8, Schmidt will speak in chapel at 10:30am. Area women of all ages have an opportunity to learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning, and charitable giving at the 12th annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar on Friday, April 8. Hosted by Luther College, the one-day educational seminar will be presented 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hotel Winneshiek. Curated by Anna Johnson ('16). Small is beautiful! The Luther College Football Cheerleading Squad will be holding tryouts next weekend. They will be held in the North Gym on April 8 from 7-9 p.m. and April 9 from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. (it is recommended participants be there for both days). Participants should come wearing t-shirt, shorts, tennis shoes, and a smile. Cheer experience is recommended but not required and those interested or those who have questions should contact cheerleaders@luther.edu.
Recent Luther graduates Ben Harney, Jon Williams, and Kai Ashland will share their experiences from their biking trip from Mexico border to Ushuaia, Argentina. They will share how the trip came about, encounters with people of different cultures, and other memories that will recap their travels! The Career Center is accepting applications for Career Assistant work-study positions for the 2016-17 academic year. Career Assistants work approximately10 hour per week assisting office staff with projects and assisting peers with resumes and cover letters. Did you know that over 80,000 disposable coffee sleeves are used per year at Luther? Student Sustainability Educators are asking for denim donations to make reusable coffee sleeves, to be distributed on campus. Donations will be collected in the box in the SOS in the Union from until April 6. Any denim donations will be accepted as long as they are clean (holes are okay).
