ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Students: Please stop by the Mail Center to notify them of your summer address, if you will not be at your permanent mailing address. All first class US Mail will be forwarded to your home address unless you let us know.  UPS/FedEX will be returned to sender as we can't forward. We will start holding packages in August for the fall semester. Please email or call the Mail Center with questions or call ext 1447.

 

The Luther College Music Department presents Mozart's "The Magic Flute" at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 8-9, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Arguably one of Mozart's most beloved and frequently performed operas, "The Magic Flute" hails the triumph of courage, virtue and wisdom. Tickets available at the Ticket Office or on-line.  

 

Principal trumpeter John Marchiando will present a guest recital at  

2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, in the Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The concert will also feature Du Huang, Luther associate professor of music, piano, and John Cord, Luther assistant professor of music, trumpet.   

 

Luther College will host an evening of new music composed by members of Luther's composition studio. Out of the 15 student composers in this year's composition studio, five students have been selected to present their pieces at 9 p.m. Monday, May 11, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Works to be performed include solo, chamber and electronic music with video.  

          

Luther College will host the Lucille Stransberry Rosholt Distinction in Accompanying and Collaborative Keyboard Performance Scholarship recital at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 10, in the Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The recital will be followed by an award ceremony and reception. Finalists include Bryan Banowetz of Robins, IA, and Kate Gerike of Chaska, MN.

 

Join Cantorei this fall! If you desire to be considered for Cantorei only, you do not need to complete the formal audition process. Simply fill out the online form (http://goo.gl/forms/WUkX2B42AI) and write "Cantorei only" in the box rather than the name of your solo. There will be an informal meeting with Dr. Wilson this Thursday, May 7 from 4:15-4:45 in Noble Recital Hall for returning or possible new members. Refreshments will be provided!

 

Free Apparel for Luther Students - If you are going to be a camp counselor or church Intern this summer, stop by College Ministries for a free T-shirt! You can pick one up in the College Ministries Office, CFL 106, between 9:-4:00,Monday-Friday. Bring your summer mailing address with you.  

 

The 30th annual Luther College Entrepreneurial Showcase was held Tuesday, April 14, in Luther College's Peace Dinning Room. During the program, the Daryl and Audrey Erdman Prizes for Entrepreneurship were awarded to Luther senior Evan Sowder, junior Eric Tiller as well as Luther sophomores Patrick Larson, Gus Nelson and Lars Sorenson. Sowder was the grand prize winner of $5,000 with his company of Evan Sowder Photography.

RERUNS

The complete program for the Friday, May 8, Student Research Symposium is now posted. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the full day, beginning with the opening session at 9 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall that includes research reflections by two outstanding students. Sessions continue throughout the day, with concurrent oral sessions, complimentary dessert on Bentdahl Commons, a poster session, interludes for conversation and music, and evening performances.  

 

Henrik Williams, Uppsala University professor of Scandinavian Languages, will present the guest lecture "From Odin to Christ- How Runes Speak of Religion" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in the Franklin W. Olin Building, Room 102. A reception will follow the lecture. According to Norse myth, the god Odin invented runes, which are illustrated on rune stones. The oldest runic inscriptions provide a glimpse of Pagans in action.

 

After backpacking, rock-climbing, and kayaking his way around the U.S. and Costa Rica, Chuck Stark ('06), will present, "Exploring the World and Finding our Place" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, in Valders Room 206. Stark will share the explorations he has taken since his time at Luther and discuss where adventures may take others in the audience using the idea that exploration happens any time.  

 

Working on a research paper? Wondering how to keep track of your sources, create a bibliography and footnotes? Zotero (free application) helps you collect, manage, and cite your sources. Bring your laptop to our workshop and learn how to download Zotero and set it up to manage your resources (available for PCs and MACs). Thursday, May 7 in Hovde Lounge, Preus Library, 7-8 p.m.

Nepalese Luther students and College Ministries are collecting funds for those affected by the earthquake in Nepal. Funds will be sent to the ELCA's Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR). LDR works in partnership with local leaders and agencies and stays long after a disaster. 100% of funds designated for earthquake relief will be used to assist those directly impacted. MORE INFORMATION. You can bring cash or checks to the College Ministries office. Watch for collection jars around campus as well.

 

Summer housing applications are available on the Res Life website and in the Res Life office. Eligible students must be employed on campus, enrolled for a summer class, or an international student. A meal plan is optional - a 2 week minimum stay required. Applications are due May 13.

Interested in learning more about the role of oil and coffee third world development, feminist economics, why the younger generation should save, the value of a liberal arts education and more? Join the Economics 490 Senior Project course in Peace Dining on Wednesday, May 6th at 6:30 p.m. to hear about their semester long research followed by a poster session. Food and refreshments will be provided.  

Tau Delta Gamma will host a beast cancer awareness night from 9-11 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, on the library lawn. Winneshiek County Celebration of Life has donated 300 pink luminaries to be lit and arranged into a breast cancer ribbon.

The Center for Sustainable Communities continues the series Luther and Climate Change on Thursdays, 9:40-10:30 a.m. in Valders 367. Presentations will focus on one topic each and will last about 15 minutes, followed by a question and answer session and discussion. The last two sessions will focus on Luther's commitments and actions and local food. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be provided.


The Luther Aquatic Center is hiring summer lifeguards.  We need certified lifeguards that will average 12-15 hours/week. Please contact Human Resources to apply.
