Luther College is proud to present the premiere of All Recipes Are Home on Saturday, April 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL. This original musical combines stories from farms in Decorah with the music of the Awful Purdies to create a unique experience that will have you thinking of food and home. Sylvia Chan-Malik will present the lecture, "'Somewhere in America': Exploring the 20th-21st Century Musical and Cultural Expressions of U.S. Muslim Women" at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, in the Franklin W. Olin Building, Room 102.
The Mask You Live In, a documentary film that explores the gender stereotypes traditionally forced upon men and boys, will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 8, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. . After the screening, Active Minds will lead a community discussion on gender stereotypes and what the community can do to combat the negative aspects of those limiting patterns. The Center Stage Series is happy to announce that there will be a food drive at the premiere of All Recipes are Home! We encourage everybody to bring one nonperishable food item or $1, which will buy $11 worth of food! This simple act of kindness will help support the Decorah community and encourage all people to think of food when they think of home. Jennifer LeDoux, Luther senior from Minneapolis, Minnesota, is the 2014-15 recipient of the Alan R. and Sally J. Brudos Family Opera Prize. She will perform a recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 11, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. A reception will follow the performance. Performing works by Henry Purcell, the Luther College Collegium Musicum concert begins 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 9, in the Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The ensemble of 11 singers and eight instrumentalists will focus on the second act of Purcell's "King Arthur," an opera with libretto by John Dryden. Also performing in the concert is the student/Decorah community instrumental ensemble of recorders and viols, and a smaller recorder ensemble.
Gardening Class Series: How to Build a Raised Bed - There are a myriad of benefits to gardening within a raised bed system! Join Jeff Scott of Driftless Gardens on Thursday, April 9th from 9:45-10:45 a.m. in Valders 262 as he discusses how to make and garden in your own raised bed. Does your organization have an event, service project, and/or student leader that deserves recognition? The Launching Luther Leaders (L3) Program invites nominations for the 2014-2015 awards program! The top three candidates from each category will be recognized at the L3 awards banquet on Sunday, May 3, 2014. Apply soon! (Nominations are due on Tuesday, April 14th.) KWLC invites the community to an informal presentation by Lindsay Kimball, Asst. Program Director of 89.3 The Current, Thursday April 9th at 2:30 p.m. in the Borlaug Room. Kimball will discuss her experiences at The Current and Minnesota Public Radio. Kimball was formerly Music Director at KWLC and a Luther College graduate in Communication Studies and Psychology. Spend J-Term 2016 studying "Entrepreneurship and the Common Good" (Paideia 450). This course in California's Silicon Valley combines visits with innovators at start-up companies and officials at some of the world's most powerful companies (Google, Pixar, etc.) with visits to social service providers that help the area's many people who are homeless and poor. Pop sensation Nick Jonas will perform "An Evening with Nick Jonas,"in the Regents Center at 9:15 p.m. Monday, April 20, in the Regents Center. Doors open at 8:45 p.m. Tickets are currently available at the Ticket Office or on-line. College Ministries and the Congregation Council invite you to view and discuss the film God's Not Dead on Tuesday, April 7 at 6:30pm in Olin 102. Immediately after the film, Professor Gereon Kopf and Professor Storm Bailey will lead the discussion of the film.
Free Peace Brunch with Seminary Rep -- Join Pastor Amy and Pastor Karla Wildberger from Wartburg Seminary for Peace Brunch and conversation after worship on Sunday, April 12 at 11:20am. Anyone who is exploring any kind of ministry is welcome to attend to learn more about seminary and possibilities in ministry. Luther College Hearing Board is seeking new student members for next year's Board. The Hearing Board is a governing body for the college's Student Code of Conduct. Interested students will need a recommendation from both a current student and faculty/staff member and a minimum 2.5 GPA (Student Application Form). More information regarding the Board responsibilities and structure are in the Student Code of Conduct. Faculty and staff may recommend students by contacting Jane Hildebrand. Deadline for applications is April 9.
Travel to the Isle of Skye next January Term - Come to an informational meeting on Tuesday, April 7, 8:30 pm in the Choir Room (in Jenson-Noble) and learn more about our music course (open to all majors) that starts in London, moves north to York, Edinburgh and the Isle of Skye, then ends at a Celtic music festival in Glasgow. Luther SAAC is hosting, Take a Kid to a Game Day on Saturday, April 11! Your child, ages 6-12, can have the opportunity to play with student athletes as they watch Softball, Baseball or Track and Field. Look for a SAAC table in front of the Regents circle drive to check in between 2:00-2:30. Parents can pick their kids up at the same location around 4:00. Come enjoy a spring day and a sporting event! Do you need to be certified in FIRST AID/CPR for your summer employment or work study position? I will be holding classes in April and am looking for students. If you are interested, please contact Vicky Jaeger. The Center for Sustainable Communities is hosting a series titled Luther and Climate Change. The series will run on Thursday mornings from 9:40-10:30 in Valders 367 starting April 2nd . The presentations will focus on one topic each and will last about fifteen minutes, followed by Q&A and discussion. The topics are tentatively: Climate Science, Policy, Economics, Technology, Luther's Commitments and Actions, and Local Food. Everyone is welcome! Refreshments will be provided.
The Career Center is accepting applications for Student Employment Positions for the 2015-16 academic year. The position categories are one to two Career Assistants (peer career advising and special projects); Social Media & Marketing Career Assistant (marketing events and resources); and two Strengths Assistants (student ambassador for strengths development initiatives). Area women of all ages will have an opportunity to learn more about financial management, retirement and estate planning, and charitable giving at the 11th annual Women, Faith and Finance seminar on Friday, April 10. Hosted by Luther College, the one-day educational seminar will be presented 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hotel Winneshiek.
