Colin Gordon, University of Iowa professor of history, will present the guest lecture "The Fire this Time: St. Louis, Ferguson and the American City" at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. The event is part of Luther's "Don't Shoot-The Perils and Promises of Privilege" Series. The residence halls will close for spring break at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13 and will reopen at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 22. Miller, Dieseth, College Apartments, Baker Village, and all college-owned houses are the only buildings open for break housing. Student IDs will be inactivated and access will be denied to all closed buildings. Students needing to be on campus must stay in one of the open buildings and register with Residence Life by March 11. *Students signed up to ride the shuttle on Saturday, March 14, may stay in their current rooms and do not need to register. The second Song Jam of the 2014-15 Luther College Art Song Jamboree series will be held at 5:15 p.m. Monday, March 9, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. The program includes repertoire by composers Pauline Viardot, Mathilde Kralik, Judith Cloud, Margaret Garwood, Mel Bonis, Betty Jackson King and Margaret Bonds. Jon Ailabouni, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a jazz trumpet recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The recital will feature Hard Drop 5, Ailabouni's Chicago-based jazz quintet.
The Honors Advisory Committee is pleased to announce this year's Luther College Peace Scholars. Congratulations to Katie Kovacovich, a junior majoring in social work, and Emily Holm, a current sophomore majoring in religion, who will spend 7 weeks this summer with other Peace Scholars from Augsburg, Augustana (Sioux Falls), Concordia (Moorhead), Pacific Lutheran, and St. Olaf studying peace and conflict resolution in Lillehammer and Oslo, Norway.

The LSGF looks for projects that promote all facets of sustainability: environmental, economic and social. Pioneer Photo Book is seeking an assistant for Spring Semester. Pioneer Photo Book creates the new online edition of the Luther College yearbook. The position offers 2-4 hours per week. Jeff Scott of Driftless Gardens will discuss strategies and techniques to help you learn to grow your own plant starts this year. Class will be held on March 12 from 9:45-10:45 in Valders 372. On Tuesday, March 10, Mary McAleese, President of Ireland 1997-2011 will be speaking as part of the Farwell Distinguished Lecture. Her presentation, Faith, Peace, and Leadership, will discuss justice, social equality, social inclusion, and reconciliation, all of which were focuses of her presidency. Join us at 7:00 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall for a conversation with one of the top 100 most powerful women in the world! Free, all are welcome.
Luther College continues to celebrate the cultures of the world by hosting the Ethnic Arts Festival in conjunction with the 2015 Oneota Film Festival. The Ethnic Arts Festival, occurring Saturday, March 7, will have several events through out the day beginning at 1 p.m. The Oneota Film Festival will take place the same weekend as the Ethnic Arts Festival, beginning at 4:15 p.m. Friday, March 6; and continuing through Sunday, March 8.
Student Life is accepting nominations for the Krahn Family Student Service Award. Nominees should be Sophomore and Junior students who have demonstrated a strong contribution to campus life in a way that embraces the spirit and mission of Luther College. Luther's 2015 Concerto Competition finals will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 6, in the Noble Recital Hall in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Concerto Competition finalists are selected from preliminary auditions held March 3. All finalists will compete in a final round of competition on March 6 and immediately following, the winner(s) will be announced. The winner(s) will appear with the Luther Symphony Orchestra or Chamber Orchestra in public performance; date(s) to be announced. Ethnic Arts Festival - Festivals and Folktales this Saturday March 5.
