ANNOUNCEMENTS

Summer housing applications are now available in the Residence Life office and on the Res Life website. Eligible students must be enrolled in summer classes, employed on campus for the summer, or an international student enrolled for fall 2015 classes. Housing will be in Miller Hall, meal plans are optional.

The Women and Gender Studies Department will host Sheila Radford-Hill, Ph.D. on Monday, February 23 at 4:00 p.m. in Valders 362. Sheila's  talk,  A Race, Rac(ed) Woman speaks about Hypervisibility, Invisibility, and Micro-aggression, extends her research  that examines African-American women's life-stories as expressions of civic life and hallmarks of the black female experience. Sheila uses feminist and critical race theory to theorize the complicated relationship between feminism and racial politics. 

 

INTERNATIONAL STUDIES INFORMATION SESSION Thursday February 26th - 9:15-10:45 a.m., Center For Global Learning (Larson Hall). Interested in world affairs? If you are considering a major/minor in International Studies, or are a current IS major/minor, this event is for you! Are you someone who is interested is service and volunteering? Then Alpha Phi Omega is the right fraternity for you! APO is a nationally known service fraternity that welcomes boys and girls! Student organization leaders! Student Senate Leadership Committee is looking for organizations to host events during the 2015 Happiness Week April 13-17. If you would like to have your organization sponsor something, stop by the SOS in the Union on Tuesday, February 2, between9:40-10:50 to learn more. Taylor Brorby, writer, environmentalist and GLBT rights activist, will give the lecture "Drill, Baby, Drill: The North Dakota Oil Boom and Iowa's Future" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. 

 

David Pendergast, Luther College class of 2002 and vice-president of corporate development and legal affairs at PCH International, will present a guest lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, Februry 26, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The lecture is titled "Cross Pacific Partnerships: The Shenzhen-Silicon Valley Innovation Bridge."

 

Heidi Brende Leathwood, guest pianist, will present a concert at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Brende Leathwood will be performing Sonata in A Major, Sonata in G Major and Sonata in D Minor by Domenico Scarlatti, Sonata Op. 31 No. 1 and Sonata Op. 109 by Beethoven, and Piano Sonata No. 1 by Henryk Mikołaj G�recki.

Interested in living in a co-ed house next year? The current residents of Norby Global House and Sustainability House invite students to tour the houses on Friday, February 20 .This is a great opportunity to see the inside of these beautiful college-owned houses and talk with the residents about living in these 2 living-learning co-ed communities. Enjoy treats and beverages while you visit Norby House from 3:30 to 5:30 and/or Sustainability House from 4:30 to 6:30. 

 

In our somewhat-human-struggle to hold it together, we build and we grasp, all the while dropping pieces and missing moments. What helps us keep it together? Find out at Forgiveness Lunch, an evening of original dance conceived and choreographed by Blake Nellis, Adjunct Faculty in Dance. Forgiveness Lunch will take place February 20 at 9:30 p.m. & February 21 at 2:00 & 9:30 p.m. in Storre Theatre. Tickets are on sale now at tickets.luther.edu, or a half hour before show at the theatre; $12 adults, $5 children 12 & under, or FREE with Luther ID. 

 

Having a study abroad experience as a student can be life-changing. Steve Holland, Luther College associate professor of economics, will discuss how immersion in a foreign culture can be equally impactful as an adult in his lecture "A Fulbright Year in Montenegro" at 10 a.m. Saturday, February 21, in Shirley Baker Commons. 


The Luther College Balalaika Ensemble will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 22, at Shirley Baker Commons. The ensemble will perform classic Russian and Ukrainian folk songs and Romany songs "Kalinka," "The Ural Mountain Ash Tree," "Dark Eyes," "Two Guitars," "Fellows, Unharness Your Horses," the Jewish favorite "Tum Balalaika" and beloved Soviet tunes "Moscow Nights" and "Katiusha."

Luther College will host the 67th annual Dorian Band Festival February 22-23. High school band students nominated by their high school directors come to stay on campus for the chance to experience Luther, rehearse with music faculty and perform in concert. The first festival concert, featuring Luther's Concert Band, Faculty Wind Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra, begins at 7 p.m. Sunday, February 22, followed by the Dorian Band Festival Grand Concert at 6:30 p.m. Monday, February 23. 

 

DUE MARCH 1: OFF-CAMPUS STUDY APPS. Thinking of studying abroad or elsewhere in the U.S. during summer 2015, fall 2015, spring 2016 or the 2015-16 year? Looking for a summer job?  A CHRISTIAN MINISTRY IN THE NATIONAL PARKS. ACMNP Ministry Teams lead interdenominational services of worship each summer in over 28 national park campgrounds and amphitheaters across America - everywhere from Yosemite, Glacier, Yellowstone, and the Grand Canyon to Denali, Alaska and Acadia, Maine. A representative will be in the Union lounge on Monday, February 23 from 10:00 a.m .- 2:00 p.m. Stop by to visit with them about their summer staff opportunities.

 

We are two retired Luther faculty (43 and 35 years, respectively, both in the English department) seeking an Austin, Texas, area house-sit or inexpensive rental during parts or all of May and June so that we can support our daughter's family in Cedar Park as they have their first child.
