ANNOUNCEMENTS

Join us Friday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL as the Center Stage Series presents the
Hot Sardines! Called "one of the best jazz bands in NY today" by Forbes Magazine, the Hot Sardines bring an exciting show from start to finish.  Hear a virtuoso piano, a jazzy clarinet, and a soulful voice combine with a swinging rhythm that will make you want to get up and dance!  Tickets are free with CAF, $27 without. Miko Kominami, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 19, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The recital is titled, "Pictures and Music," and will feature works by composers Jerry Owen and Modest Mussorgsky.

Lisa Rausch, lead post-doctoral researcher on a project studying deforestation in Brazil, will present a guest lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 19, in the Valders Hall of Science Room 206.

Richard Merritt and Scott Hurley will present the Paideia Texts and Issues lecture "Invisible Geographies: Violence and Oppression in the Prison Industrial Complex and Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. A reception held in Qualley Lounge will follow the lecture.

The Oneota Review is now accepting submissions! Luther's annual written and visual art magazine will be accepting submissions until March 8. Send your work -- written or visual art of any kind -- to oneotareview@luther.edu or SPO 1909. Please limit text submissions to two pages single spaced. Contact Laura Hayes or Margaret Yapp with any questions. Luther alumni are also encouraged to submit!
 

RAINBOW TRAIL BIBLE CAMP and SKY RANCH BIBLE CAMP (both located in Colorado) will have information tables in the Union lounge on Wednesday, February 18 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Stop by and visit with the representatives about their summer camp opportunities.

SUMMER CAMP FAIR - Thursday, February 19 in the Dahl Centennial Union from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Representatives from over 25 camps will be attending to visit with students who are interested in their summer camp opportunities. Plan to stop by and visit with them. The ELCA Summer Camp Fair will be held the following week (on February 26).  Different camps at each Fair!

The Summer Housing Office is hiring! There are several spots available this summer for responsible, enthusiastic, and outgoing individuals. Duties include facilitating client registrations, answering telephones, providing basic information about Luther/Decorah, and more. We want students with excellent communication skills, a strong ability to work independently and take direction from peers, and a focus on providing excellent customer service. Pastor Amy Zalk Larson is leading a new t.r.e.c. small group this spring. The group provides space for deeper reflection on God's call in your life. A new group is formed each semester. The group will meet on six Monday nights from 8-9:15pm To secure a spot email ministry@luther.edu.

BTQ is currently looking for acts for its 3rd annual BTQ Talent Show. The proceeds will go to the First Lutheran Church Free Clinic and Ebola research. Acts must sign up by February 17th. Auditions will take place on the 19th, 20th, and 21 of February. The talent show will be on Saturday, February 28 at 7:00 p.m. in the CFL. Applications are now available for the Erdman Entrepreneurial Prize Competition. This annual competition recognizes entrepreneurial activities that demonstrate the Luther student's ability to recognize and pursue a business opportunity without regard to required resources and to build "added value" beyond a personal salary. Prize money totaling $10,000 is awarded. This competition is only open to those who already have an established business. Submit applications to Carol Stoddard in Olin 327 by March 13, 2015.

Luther College's "Music in the Shape of a Pear" event features works by Luther's composer-in-residence, Brooke Joyce, at 4 p.m. Sunday, February 15, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Decorah. The performance features solo, chamber and orchestral music composed by Joyce for his Luther colleagues.

The Unison Piano Duo, featuring husband and wife team Du Huang and Xiao Hu, members of the Luther College music faculty, will present a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 14, in the Noble Recital Hall in Jenson-Noble Music Hall.

Gary Moss, Luther College adjunct faculty of music, will perform a baritone recital at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 15, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. 
The recital is titled "In Times of War."  

"Order X Chaos" by design artists Bradley Coulter and Vinicius Lima will be on display February 16-March 13, in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts. Coulter and Lima take several design principles and techniques used to create order in content and apply them toward a contrary idea in an effort to understand if these tools can bring chaos to the orderly visual communications we encounter every day.

 

Peter Lingen, Luther College teaching associate in music, will present a guitar recital at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, February 15, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The program features music from Brazil, Cuba, Paraguay and the United States, including pieces from composers Bellinati, Assad and Brouwer.   

 

Kathleen McGarry will present the spring Luther College Phi Beta Kappa lecture, "Intergenerational Transfers from Parents to Children," at 7 p.m. Thursday, February 12, in the Franklin W. Olin Building Room 102. She will also present "50 Years of the War on Poverty: What it has Meant for the Elderly," at a brown bag session at noon Thursday, February 12, in the Mott Room of the Dahl Centennial Union.

Rebecca Boehm Shaffer, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a horn recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 14, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Boehm Shaffer's program includes the works of Verne Reynolds, Olivier Messiaen, Daniel Schnyder and Richard Strauss
