ANNOUNCEMENTS

On Monday 10/20/2014 at 5:00 a.m. the campus network will be down for maintenance. This maintenance will increase the available bandwidth between the campus network and our firewall. During the maintenance, Luther services will be available from the Internet, but users on campus will not be able to access the Internet or Luther servers. Service will be restored prior to 7:30 a.m..

 

On Tuesday 10/21/2014 at 5:00 a.m. the campus wireless network will be down for maintenance. Though the wireless network will be down, wired connections will remain working. Service will be restored prior to 7:30 a.m.

The Luther College Democrats will be hosting Pat Murphy, Democratic candidate for Iowa District 1. He will be on campus in Bentdahl Commons to meet with voters on October 23 from noon until 2 p.m. Make sure that you come grab a cookie and some hot chocolate after you vote in the Union.

Luther College has been awarded a $100,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to fund a series of academic offerings that will provide students and faculty with greater opportunities for collaborative research in the humanities and a deeper understanding of the liberal arts curriculum.

 

Beth Ray Westlund, associate professor of music, and Kristin Hightower, former Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a vocal recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, October 25, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. Jessica Paul, Luther professor of music, is the collaborative pianist for the recital.

 

The Calliope Duo, featuring Elizabeth McNutt, flute, and Shannon Wettstein, piano, will perform a guest recital at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 28, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. The recital features recent solo and chamber works by Mario Lavista, Jos�-Luis Hurtado, Arturo Furentes, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez and a world premiere by Iowa composer, Harvey Sollberger.

 

Strongly influenced by Dorothy Lange and her late 1930s Farm Security Administration collection, Jason Elkins works predominantly in the medium of digital photography. Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and raised in Decorah, Iowa, Elkins' work will be featured in an exhibit from October 27-December 12in Preus Library.

 

Luther College students and community members of all religious backgrounds will gather to learn about Diwali, the Festival of Lights, at7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 26, in the Peace Dining Room, Dahl Centennial Union. There will be a brief program, followed by light refreshments and a time for conversation. The celebration is part of a series of "interfaith holiday celebrations" that allow students an opportunity to share parts of their own traditions.

What a Weekend!  

 

I may be Luther's tenth president, inaugurated on the tenth day of the tenth month, but it is you--the Luther community--who scores a perfect 10. What a magnificent weekend! Tom and I were amazed at how smoothly everything went and how exceptionally well this college hosts guests. My sincere thanks to each of you who played a role. I am proud to be part of such a talented and dedicated group staff, faculty and students.

Join us on October 24 at 7:30 pm in the CFL as the Center Stage Series presents In the Heat of the Night, performed by LA Theatre Works. This play, based on the classic book, is a crime-thriller that follows the story of a man trying to free himself from accusations of murder and from inequality. Travel with Luther students and Pr. Amy Zalk Larson to the 2014 Seminary and Divinity School Day at Augsburg College Tuesday, October 28. It will be a day to connect, reflect, and explore theological graduate study options with representatives from major seminaries and divinity schools. Students of all denominations welcome. LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE! October 17 is the due date for books checked out from the main stacks by students on or before Sunday, October 12. Books may be renewed once online or by bringing them in physically to the circulation desk if you have exceeded the renewal limit. The new due date is December 12, the last day of classes this fall. A Bargain Barn Sale is coming up! Come to the Red (Jewel) Barn Thursday October 30th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. for our fall sale. Inventory items include some of the usual items that the College no longer has need for, which are still in good condition. Heather Armstrong, Luther College associate professor of music, will perform an oboe recital featuring music inspired by poetry, ideas and images related to the natural world at7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 23,
in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.

 

Flu clinic on October 17 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. outside of Marty's in the Union. Students, staff, faculty and significant others of staff/faculty may attend. Cost is $25 for the injection and $30 for the flu mist. Staff/Faculty...receipts can be taken to HR (if you are on the Luther insurance plan) for reimbursement.

 

The lawns on the upper campus will be fertilized and spot treated for broad-leaf weeds, especially along sidewalks and curbs, beginning Friday, October 17. The fertilization process will begin during the day on Friday and spraying will take place after 5 p.m. and continue throughout the weekend, weather permitting. This procedure is in keeping with Luther's turf management policy. If you would like a copy of the policy, contact Gary Brickman, 387-1668.

 

Luther College students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2015 National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Would you like to showcase your research at a national conference? Luther will provide support for selected students to present at NCUR. The conference will be April 16-18, 2015, at Eastern Washington University.
