Learn more about J-TERM OFF-CAMPUS STUDY opportunities
An information session will be held on Tuesday, March 4, 8-9:15 p.m., in Olin 102. Center for Global Learning staff will review the J-Term 2015 off-campus offerings and talk about the application process. An informational brochure highlighting all of the programs will be distributed at the meeting.

 

SAC Concerts presents Pentatonix Thursday, March 6 in the CFL. Tickets are sold out. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and the concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Concertgoers will not be allowed to carry backpacks, large purses, flash/professional cameras, beverage containers or food into the venue. Luther students should be prepared to show their ticket along with Luther I.D. to enter the concert.

 

Summer housing applications for rooms In Dieseth are now available in the Residence Life office and on our webpage http://www.luther.edu/reslife/summer-housing. Eligible students must be enrolled in summer classes at Luther, working on campus, or be an international student enrolled for fall 2014.

 

Interfaith Holiday CelebrationHoli Reception, 7 p.m. Sunday, March 16, in Peace Dining Room. Join College Ministries, the Luther Diversity Center, and the Interfaith Student Association for light refreshments and a brief program celebrating Holi, a Hindu festival of spring and color. Learn about this tradition and have fun together around face-painting, making a colorful rangoli or mandala, balloon games, and sweet treats. There is no charge for admission and all are welcome!

 

STUDY ABROAD with ISA Abroad! A representative will be on campus on Tuesday, March. 11. Stop by his table outside of Marty's from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. to visit about programs in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Q's? Luther College presents "La Dispute," a theatre performance inspired by Pierre de Marivaux and adapted by Bobby Vrtis, Luther assistant professor of theatre, and Luther students. The performances, held in the Jewel Theatre in the Center for the Arts, are at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, March 12-139:30 p.m. Friday, March 14; and 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 15.

 

Angela Kueny, Luther assistant professor of nursing, will present the Paideia Text and Issues lecture, "Both Sides Now: Considering Forgiveness in Religious and Communal Old Order Amish Traditions," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The lecture will be followed by a reception in Qualley Lounge.

Wondering how to keep track of your sources, create a bibliography and footnotes? Zotero (free application) helps you collect, manage, and cite your sources. Decorah Shopping Shuttle -- Saturday, March 8 at 1:30 p.m.. A shuttle will drive students from the Union to downtown Decorah and Wal-Mart for a shopping run this Saturday at 1:30 pm. Meet in the Student Organizational Suite 10 minutes before departure. Advanced sign up is highly recommended using the online form.

 

The Iowa College Foundation announces its call for proposals for R.J. McElroy Trust Student/Faculty Research Projects for 2014-15. Student participants must be juniors or seniors in the fall of 2014. Applications require dual authorship by the proposing student, or team of students, and a sponsoring faculty member. Maximum award is $2,000. Luther is eligible to submit up to four proposals. Internal deadline for proposals is April 16. Forms are available in the Dean's Office (Union 262) or email [email protected].

 

Are you interested in studying peace building in Northern Ireland and Ireland January 2015? Come to an informational meeting with Paul Gardner (Political Science) and Britt Rhodes (Social Work) onTuesday, March 11 from 6:00-6:45pm in Koren 218. Overnight destinations include Dublin and Galway in Ireland and Derry, Ballycastle and Belfast in Northern Ireland, UK. This course will satisfy Paideia II and intercultural and is open to those with junior or senior standing by January 2015.

 

The Wonderful World of Transplants and Seeds Gardening Class -- Join us for a field trip to River Root Farm from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Monday, March 17 where we will learn about transplants and seeds from Mike Bollinger and Katie Prochaska. On this lunch-break long trip we will make the trek up to River Root Farm, which is located one mile from campus to learn the ropes. Luther Community Garden Plots -- Gardening season is right around the corner! Whether you are a lifetime gardener looking for a new space, interested in trying your hand at growing some veggies for the first time or somewhere in-between, you are welcome at the community garden. We offer full (20' x 20') plots for $30, half plots (20' x 10') for $20 and student plots (5'x5') for $10. More information and the plot request form can be found online.

Rasmussen Pre-Lecture Discussion--Dr. Larry Rasmussen will present "Vocation and Sustainability" on Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in the CRH.  He has two articles published in the current issue of the Journal of Lutheran Ethics: "Climate Change as a Perfect Moral Storm" and "Lutheran Sacramental Imagination."  Jim Martin-Schramm will facilitate a discussion about these articles for all members of the Luther community on Thursday, March 6, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the Hovde Lounge. The community is welcome to an Ecumenical Ash Wednesday Service on March 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall, hosted by Luther and St. Benedict's Parish. Join us as we begin the Lenten season with the imposition of ashes and sharing Holy Communion. An offering will be collected to support "People on the Move," the Student Congregation Project supporting those living in transition locally through the Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center and globally through the Lutheran Disaster Response work with Syrian refugees.

 

Discounted Tickets to March 9 Peace Prize Forum--A bus is going from Luther to the Nobel Peace Prize Forum in Minneapolis on Sunday, March 9 (leaving at 8:30 a.m. and returning at 9 p.m.). Cost for the conference and the bus is $5 for students. Spots are limited and will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Register and pay in the President's Office. Luther College Entrepreneurship Club is hosting a speaker on the Tuesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Olin 107. The guest speaker is Carolyn Corbin, the owner of Corbin and Group Consultancy Company in Decorah. Students are invited to come and get inspired by Corbin's business journey and to get advice on start-ups and business development.


Luther College music faculty Jonathon Struve, baritone, and Jessica Paul, piano, will present a lecture recital, "Wedding Text and Music in the Creation of Song," at 7 p.m. Friday, March 7, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall on Luther's campus. The event will explore the relationship between composers and the poets and texts that have inspired their song settings.

 
Luther faculty Jennaya Robison, soprano, and Jessica Paul, piano, along with guest artist Jared Rogers will present a program of art song, oratorio and opera arias at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8 in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Performance works include Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" and music by Robert Schumann and Poulenc, among others.
