This unique fusion of music is unlike anything you've heard before! Simon Shaheen Ensemble will perform at 7:30 on Thursday, February 13th in the CFL Main Hall. The acoustic world jazz includes voice, flute, saxophone, guitar, double bass, percussion, and the oud, an Arabic guitar-like instrument. Tickets are free with CAF and available at the box office or at tickets.luther.edu. Good news for music majors - this is a green card event!

 

Beyond the Bubble Seminars for February 11 include:  "Basic Computer Maintenance and Troubleshooting";  "Microsoft Excel Basics"; and "Help!, I'm Being Interviewed at a Five-star Restaurant!"   Students in work-study positions should check with their supervisors if they want to attend for paid job training. For seminar descriptions and registration (required) form, see http://www.luther.edu/careers/beyond-the-bubble/.  


Meet Simon Shaheen at his workshop Arabic Music, Connecting with Jazz! All students are welcome to come learn how Shaheen merges elements of Arabic and jazz music with improvisation to create his own unique style of music. Presented by the Center Stage Series and sponsored by the Luther College Diversity Council. Join us at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 14 in the CFL Recital Hall.

 

Student Payroll will be Friday, February 14 for January work.  Your electronic pay advice will be available at My.Luther on February 14. If you have a work credit plan, both your statement of account and your pay advice will be available on My.Luther.

 

SAC Concerts will present the a capella group Pentatonix in concert on March, 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL! Tickets will go on sale to students Monday, February 10 and to the public the following Monday. Tickets are general admission and free for students with CAF or $25 without and are available through the Luther Ticket Office. Please make sure that the name on ticket matches student ID.


STUDY ABROAD in SCOTLAND! IFSA-Butler's Scotland Assistant Director will be on campus on Wednesday, Feb. 12.  Stop by her table outside of Marty's from 11-1 to visit about studying in Scotland or elsewhere with IFSA's programs in Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, New Zealand. Q's? Luther student Fatimetu Jatri Emhamed will give a talk on her country titled "Africa's last Colony, Western Sahara" on Thursday, February 13, 9:40 - 10:40am in Koren 217.  All are welcome.  Sponsored by International Studies. 


Luther College Nordic Choir, one of the top college choirs in the nation, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 11, at Center for Faith and Life. Nordic Choir, founded in 1946, enjoys national and international acclaim as a premier collegiate choral ensemble in the United States.

 

Applications are now available for the Erdman Entrepreneurial Prize Competition at Luther College. This annual competition recognizes entrepreneurial activities that demonstrate the Luther student's ability to recognize and pursue a business opportunity without regard to required resources and to build "added value" beyond a personal salary. Prize money totaling $10,000 is awarded. This competition is only open to those who already have an established business. Submit applications to the Financial Aid Office by February 14, 2014.

Luther has been selected to participate in the "Up to Us" competition, a nation-wide campaign to educate students and the community about the national debt. Help Luther win by liking their Facebook page and taking their one minute, five question quiz (the link is under the about me section). Two people will be drawn each week to win $25 gift certificate to the place of their choosing. We will draw one person who took the quiz to win a 32GB Microsoft Surface tablet! 

 

Free Food, Info about Seminary -- Reps from the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago will be at Luther February 13-14. Join them and Pr. Amy for a free supper at Mabe's Pizza at 5:30pm on February 13. Email [email protected] to RSVP so we can order food ahead and help get you there. Or join them for lunch at 12pm in Oneota on February 14.

 

Legends Fitness Center is overflowing with lost items. We will be placing them out on tables starting Tuesday, February 11 so you can claim your lost items and we can clean our drawers! If you can't remember where you left a shirt or shoes or water bottle, check our table!


The Luther Alumni Magazine is seeking student photos from study away experiences including summer 2013, fall semester 2013 and January Term 2014. We invite you to submit 4-5 photos taken during your experience. Please also say what program you were on, your class year, and what prompted you to take each photo. Some photos will appear in the spring print issue of the magazine, and more will appear with the online version. Send photos to  [email protected] .

 
There will be a Heartsaver CPR class held on Tuesday, February 11, starting at 5:30 p.m. If you are looking to be certified for your summer jobs, this is the class you need to take. Please contact

RERUNS  

SAC Spotlight invites the community to enjoy a new and comical twist on the ancient art of magic with Michael Kent at 8:30 p.m. Friday, February 7, in Marty's CyberCaf�. Tickets are FREE with Caf or $5 and are available through the Luther Ticket Office. Kent's performances provide a new take on magic by spinning irreverent and often satirical comedy into the show.

Benjamin Yates, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a trombone recital at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 8, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. The recital will feature a varied program including works from the early 1800s to the present, representing composers from Germany, Croatia and Australia.

 

Are you interested in being a Resident Assistant? Residence Life is beginning the staff selection process for 2014-2015. Anyone interested in applying for a Resident Assistant position must attend ONE MANDATORY session. The information sessions are Sunday, February 9 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, February 11 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Both sessions will be held in Valders 206. Questions? Luther College students will share their January term experiences with the community through song and reflective journal readings at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 7, in the Noble Recital Hall. The homecoming concert will be presented by students currently studying in the "Choral Singing in Namibia and South Africa" January term class led by Gregory Peterson, Luther associate professor of music and college organist, and Andrew Last, Luther assistant professor of music. 

 

Luther College will host the 43rd annual Dorian Orchestra Festival February 9-10. The first festival concert, featuring the Luther College Symphony Orchestra, begins at 7 p.m. Sunday, February 9, followed by the Dorian Orchestra Festival Grand Concert at7 p.m. Monday, February 10. Both concerts will be held in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. 

 
Color Printing Changes: Color print jobs from the library computer lab can be found at the color copier/printer next to the DVD shelves. Follow instructions there to find and release your job. The cost is $.25 per side. GoPrint funds can no longer be spent on color printing. Recognized student organizations may print in color in the Student Organizational Suite in the Union. Color printing is also available in the Document Center in Main. Contact the LIS Technology Help Desk with questions.

Attention Students Registered for Private Music Lessons --If you decide to drop lessons the following schedule will be used to compute the charge for spring 2014: Dropping lessons: by February 9 - No charge; by February 16 - $38 charge; by February 23 - $76 charge; by March 4 - $114 charge; after March 4 - Full charge/$425. This schedule will be followed with NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

A representative from the PEACE CORP will be on campus on Monday, February 10. They will have a table in the Union lobby from 12:00 noon-3:00 p.m. An information session will be held later that afternoon at 4:30 p.m.in Main 111. Plan to attend to learn more about the Peace Corps, career opportunities, application process and more!

 

Cantorei, an all-women's choir including first-years through seniors, will be accepting new members for the spring semester.  Cantorei meets in the Jenson-Noble Choir room on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2:45 to 3:45.  If you are free at that time and interested in singing with other women on campus, come to Jenson room 200B between 2:30 and 4:00 on Wednesday, February 5th, for an informal audition/interview.  Or email [email protected].  "We are the music-makers. . . Riding and lesson opportunities in exchange for horse stable help. Some horse experience required. Duties may include: grooming, tacking up, feeding, cleaning tack, cleaning stalls, and turn out. English discipline operation working out of a barn 2 miles from the Luther campus from October through April, and a facility 10 miles from Luther May through September. 2-4 hours in the evening, weekend hours vary. The Student Activities Office is pleased to announce that Kassandra Miller has accepted the temporary position of Coordinator of Student Organizations. Kassandra is a 2009 Luther graduate, and she will begin her new duties on Monday, February 10th.
