ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

College Ministries will be collecting donations for victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan. Your donation to Lutheran Disaster Response, designated for "Pacific Typhoon Response," will be used entirely (100%) to help families whose lives and livelihoods have been impacted. The community will have the opportunity to pray for typhoon victims in chapel services 10:30 a.m. M, W, F and at Soul Food Wednesday night at 9:30 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall.

 

Student Payroll will be Thursday, November 14 for October work. Your electronic pay advice will be available at My.Luther on November 14. If you have a work credit plan, both your statement of account and your pay advice will be available on My.Luther.


Decorah Shopping Shuttle - Saturday, November 16  at 1:30 p.m. A twice-monthly shuttle to downtown Decorah and Wal-Mart for a shopping run. Meet in the Student Organizational Suite 10 minutes before departure. Advanced sign up is highly recommended using the online form 

 

Join Luther Classical Society on Wednesday, November 13, at 

7 pm in Olin 102 for a lecture on Sappho, the renowned female Greek poet! Dr. Philip Freeman has been researching her and will present on his research next Wednesday. See you there!


Interested in the PEACE CORPS? A representative will be on campus Tuesday, November 12. He will be at an information table in the Union from 11:00 a.m . - 2:00 p.m. A presentation will also be held in the evening at 6:30 p.m. in Main 111. Plan to attend to hear about the experiences in the Peace Corps, application process and more! You won't want to miss this!

 

Adam Carroll will speak on campus Wednesday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Valders 206. He will be speaking about financial management in his talk "Winning the Money Game". Adam will demonstrate that "most Americans were never taught the rules of how to play the money game. Play by the rules, and it's entirely possible to be completely financially free by your early 30's".

 

Calling all game geeks and word nerds! Join us to celebrate International Games Day at Preus Library on Saturday, November 16 from 2-5 p.m. Test your skills against our faculty Scrabble Masters. Working on a research paper? Wondering how to keep track of your sources, create a bibliography and footnotes?Zotero (free application) helps you collect, manage, and cite your sources. Bring your laptop to our workshop (Thursday, November 13 in Hovde Lounge, Preus Library, 7:00-8:00 p.m.) and learn how to download Zotero and set it up to manage your resources, available for PCs and MACs.  

 

Enjoy an afternoon of jazz with Luther College's Jazz Band and Vocal Jazz Ensemble at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Luther senior Elizabeth Martens and the Jazz Band is under the direction of Jon Ailabouni, Luther adjunct faculty in music.

 

The Luther College Varsity Band and Philharmonia ensemble will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 19, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. Directed by Jon Ailabouni, the Varsity Band will perform works by James Barnes, Percy Grainger, Charles Ives, Alfred Reed and Dimitri Shostakovich. Philharmonia, directed by Spencer Martin, will perform works by Georges Bizet, Ralph Vaughan Williams and Giuseppe Verdi.

Rob Hogg, state senator from Iowa, will present a Luther College guest lecture, "A Call to Climate Action - America's New National Purpose," at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 14, in Room 102 of the Franklin W. Olin Building.

 

Luther's Active Minds student group and Counseling Services are sponsoring a screening of the Lifetime movie "Call Me Crazy" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, in Valders 206. Call Me Crazy: A Five Film" brings together an all-star ensemble cast with five interwoven stories about how love, support and hope can help us overcome emotional health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder and PTSD.

 

Health Service is having additional flu clinics to include spouses/ significant others on the following dates: November 15: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; November 22: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Cost is $25.00 for flu shot. (Flu mist is no longer available this year through Health Service). Staff/faculty -- cash or check only.

 

Luther Athletes Serving Others is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive through November 19. The drive is designed to help those in the community that might not otherwise be able to put a big Thanksgiving dinner on the table. All donations received will go to the food pantry at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

The Wind and Percussion Ensemble will present a fall concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. They will perform works by Tomohiro Tatebe, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Steven Reineke, Alfred Reed and John Philip Sousa. The Wind and Percussion Ensemble is a group of 50 select band students conducted by Joan deAlbuquerque.

  

Slurs and Stereotypes: Intercultural Incompetence is a panel discussion about how community is disrupted when we make biased statements about others based on their gender, race, culture religion, culture, citizenship, sexual orientation and identity. Come join in the discussion! Tuesday, November 12, 8 p.m. in the Mott Room in the Union.
