ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Rob Hogg, state senator from Iowa, will present a Luther College guest lecture, "A Call to Climate Action - America's New National Purpose," at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 14, in Room 102 of the Franklin W. Olin Building.

 

Luther's Active Minds student group and Counseling Services are sponsoring a screening of the Lifetime movie "Call Me Crazy" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, in Valders 206. Call Me Crazy: A Five Film" brings together an all-star ensemble cast with five interwoven stories about how love, support and hope can help us overcome emotional health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder and PTSD.

 

Health Service is having additional flu clinics to include spouses/ significant others on the following dates: November 15: 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.; November 22: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Cost is $25.00 for flu shot. (Flu mist is no longer available this year through Health Service). Staff/faculty -- cash or check only.

 

Luther Athletes Serving Others is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive through Nov. 19. The drive is designed to help those in the community that might not otherwise be able to put a big Thanksgiving dinner on the table. All donations received will go to the food pantry at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.

 

STUDY ABROAD with Arcadia! A representative will be on campus on Thursday, November 14. Stop by her table outside of Marty's from 11-1 to visit about programs in Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Great Britain, Ireland, Latin America, and Turkey. Q's? The Wind and Percussion Ensemble will present a fall concert at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, in the Main Hall of the Center for Faith and Life. They will perform works by Tomohiro Tatebe, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Steven Reineke, Alfred Reed and John Philip Sousa. The Wind and Percussion Ensemble is a group of 50 select band students conducted by Joan deAlbuquerque.

  

Slurs and Stereotypes: Intercultural Incompetence is a panel discussion about how community is disrupted when we make biased statements about others based on their gender, race, culture religion, culture, citizenship, sexual orientation and identity. Come join in the discussion! Tuesday, November 12, 8 p.m. in the Mott Room in the Union.

Have you heard the buzz around campus about the book, College (Un)Bound? Copies are now available in the Book Shop at a reduced rate of $16. 

 

On October 31, the Luther College Book Shop celebrated Halloween along with the arrival of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and their famous song, "Thrift Shop." The Book Shop asked the Luther community to bring in a donated clothing item in exchange for $10 off a new Luther hooded sweatshirt. The generous response of the Luther community brought in more than 30 items of clothing.

RERUNS

On Tuesday, November 12, 2013 Kristy Gould, Professor of Psychology will present the second lecture in the 2013-14 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series "Studying the 'Other." Her lecture, titled "Research in Animal Cognition as an Example of Studying the "Other": What It Can Teach Us About Animals and about Ourselves will be at

7:00 p.m.in the CRH.  The lecture series is sponsored by the Paideia Endowment and is open to the public.

Reflections from Luther's Peace Scholars -- Come hear what Cate Anderson '14 and Maggie Steinberg '15 learned in Oslo, Norway this past summer as Luther's Peace Scholars. Their presentation will be held Wednesday, November 13, from 12:00 noon-1:00 p.m. in the Borlaug Room. Feel free to bring in lunch. 

 

SOS Open House! Ever wonder what that long room in the Union is with the computers? Come check out the Student Organizational Suite (SOS) and its new resources for students and student organizations!   Stop by in between classes to see what the SOS (Union 102) has to offer while enjoying some free snacks and music! Tuesday, Nov. 12, 12:30-3:30 pm!

Students planning to study off-campus during summer 2014, fall 2014, spring 2015 or the entire 2014-15 year, need to complete a Luther application by February or March, and in some cases earlier.
