Do you want to have a voice in what artists are featured in next year's Center Stage Series, or even just see who's being considered? Join Tanya Gertz and the Performing Arts Committee on Tuesday, October 29, at 9:40 a.m. in the CFL, Qualley Lounge as they discuss planning for the 2014-15 season. This meeting is open to the entire Luther community and will provide opportunities for attendees to explore artists currently under consideration and make suggestions.
 

Join us Friday, November 1 as the Center Stage Series presents Masters of the Fiddle featuring beloved fiddlers Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy! This dynamic duo bring a whirlwind of fiddle-driven music, dance, and song, combining the best of French, Celtic, bluegrass, and even Cajun styles.**This is a Green Card Event** Tickets are free with CAF, $15 without. to purchase tickets, look for PAC representatives outside the Caf this Monday-Wednesday, visit the box office or go online to tickets.luther.edu 

  

Extended study hours in the library! The library's main floor will remain open for general study until 1 a.m. Sunday-Thursday (fall and spring term). All Library and Technology Help Desk services will continue to end at midnight, and lower and upper floors will close at midnight. Students who wish to remain on the main floor to study may do so. (Note: This is a pilot project and subject to change). The Library and Technology Help Desk have lengthened their regular Friday evening hours to 9 p.m., fall and spring terms. 

 

Bring Your Own Ukulele!  Do you have a ukulele? Do you have friends who have ukuleles? Bring them (the ukuleles and the friends) to the Center Stage Series show Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain - there will be a play-along during the show! Music is available ahead of time at the box office. Get your tickets now for the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain at 7:30 on Saturday, November 16th.

 

The Luther College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Daniel Baldwin, will present a concert at the Center for Faith and Life, at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, November 10. The program will feature internationally renowned pianist, Du Huang, as soloist on Edvard Grieg's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A Minor.

 

A Faculty Research Symposium will start at 9 a.m. Saturday, November 2, in Valders Hall of Science Room 206. Panels will continue throughout the day in Valders Room 206 and in the Franklin W. Olin Building, Room 102. The symposium and panels are intended for a broad audience and showcase the intellectual curiosity and cross-disciplinary dialogue that is at the heart of Luther's liberal arts education tradition. 

 

Sustainability e-newsletter: read online or subscribe -- This Fall the Center for Sustainable Communities launched a biweekly sustainability newsletter as a way to share special features, upcoming events, spotlights and job postings related to sustainability on campus and in the region. The most recent edition is available online and includes features about the solar panels on the President's House and the Green Roof on SHL. You are invited to subscribe to the e-newsletter so you receive future editions.

 

"Points of Departure in the Landscape," pastels and paintings by Mount Vernon, Iowa, artist Susan Coleman will be on display October 28-December 13 in Preus Library. Coleman sees her work as a meditation, drawing on her memories, questions, and attempts to settle her ever-shifting perceptions. The artist says her goal is to go beyond the merely scenic aspect of landscape. 

  

Another Luther Reuse Sale will be held on Monday, November 4th from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. The sale will take place in the Ashmore-Jewell barn, which is next to Baker Village. As a replacement of the annual Luther College auction, the reuse sale will sell a variety of items no longer needed by the College. An art exhibit featuring Luther College alumnus Wendell Arneson will be on display October 28-December 13, in the Kristin Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts. Luther will host a gallery reception for the artist at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 31, in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery. 

RERUNS

 

Students, faculty and staff are invited to All Saints Day Chapel on Friday, November 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Join the community as we celebrate new saints born or adopted into our community and grieve the loss of loved ones we have entrusted to God's care. All will be invited to come forward and light candles in memory or honor of those they remember.

 

SAC Concerts presents Macklemore & Ryan Lewis 10/31/13 at 7:30 p.m.! Upon arrival, students with CAF must present ticket and student ID. If name on ticket doesn't match ID, the concertgoer must pay $25 ticket price. Family-friendly costumes allowed. Bags, cameras, and beverages not permitted. Concertgoers may be subjected to visual/physical pat downs by security. Those noticeably under the influence won't be permitted. No re-entry. Those disrespectful of others will be asked to leave.

On Thursday, October 31, visit the Book Shop's "Thrift Shop." Bring in any gently used  sweatshirt and receive $10 off any new Luther hoodie. Donations will be given to a local  thrift shop. Come dressed in your best thrift shop outfit and get a treat! Let our "thrift  shop" employees help you find the best bargains. What, what, what, what?????

 

The Nottingham Program 2014-15 application deadline is November 1.  Luther's Nottingham Program is open to students who will have junior status during the 2014-15 academic year; financial aid is available.  Contact Corby Preus, x1275, in the Center for Global Learning to request an application.

 

Decorah Shopping Shuttle - Wednesday, October 30th  at 7:30 p.m. A twice-monthly shuttle to downtown Decorah and Wal-Mart for a shopping run.  Meet in the Student Organizational Suite 10 minutes before departure.  Advanced sign up is highly recommended using the online form.  

 

Interested in studying geology in the hills of Italy and Croatia?  Attend a brief informational meeting at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, October 30 in Valders 362 to learn more about Luther's Earth and Environment in Italy program for fall semester 2014. Mark your calendars! VOLUNTEER/NON-PROFIT CAREER FAIR - Thursday, November 7th in the Dahl Centennial Union from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Stop by to visit with representatives about their full-time/part-time/internships/volunteer opportunities. 

 

Do you have experience on stage or in front of a camera? The Counseling Service is looking to fill one of their video peer educator positions. Requirements include writing, developing, memorizing and recording scripts of videos for Counseling Service. This position is 6 hours per week. If interested, please submit a resume to the Counseling Service; deadline is November 8 or until the position is filled. Questions? Contact Stu Johnston in the Counseling Service.

 

UMACS Hosts Needed!  Luther is hosting the Upper Midwest Association for Campus Sustainability Conference on November 8-9.  Around 60 students from other colleges and universities are expected to come.  In order to save them money on hotels, the Center for Sustainable Communities is trying to match visiting students with Luther student hosts.  If you are able and willing to help, please complete the UMACS Student Housing Form by October 31!
