ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Subroto Bagchi will deliver a keynote address Thursday, October 10, at 7 p.m.in the CRH. Bagchi is co-founder and chairman of Mindtree Ltd., a global information technology solutions company. Mr. Bagchi will spend several days on the Luther campus, visiting classes. India's No. 1 best-selling business author, Bagchi will complete his visit with a keynote address covering his views on ethical business practices and management styles and his thoughts on successful entrepreneurship.
 

Charles W. Beatty, Luther College class of 1973 and an established otorhinolaryngologist, will present  "Can You Hear Me Now?! Hearing Loss and its Treatment" at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 5, Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. The presentation is part of the Hoslett Memorial Lecture Series, named in honor of Professor Sherman A. Hoslett, and his work in the biology department at Luther for 30 years.

 

Joseph Breitenstein, associate professor of psychology, will present the fall Paideia Lecture "The 'Other' is Us: The Stigmatization of Mental Illness" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 8, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall. The presentation will focus on the impact of peoples' views and thoughts of mental illness and how society is placing persons with mental illness into groups without even realizing it.


Luther College Jazz
ensembles will perform selections from the rich tradition of American jazz music starting at 9:15 p.m. Friday, October 4, in Marty's CyberCaf� in the Dahl Centennial Union.
The concert includes performances by Luther College's jazz combos, featuring improvisation and original student compositions, as well as works from the Jazz Orchestra.

 

Jim Wand will be performing on October 11 at 7:30 pm in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets are free with CAF or $10 without. Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.luther.eduDr. Jim Wand has been involved in the field of hypnosis for over 25 years. He holds a Ph.D. in the field of psychology, has over 6,000 professional engagements to his credit and is considered to be one of the most professional hypnotic entertainers in the world today.

 

The Book Shop will begin returning textbooks from Fall Term to publishers the week of October 7th. If you still need books for the fall term, we strongly encourage you to make your purchases now. 

 

The Nottingham Program 2014-15 applications are now available.  Luther's Nottingham Program, currently in its 42nd year, is open to students who will have junior status during the 2014-15 academic year; financial aid is available. Applications are due on November 1. Contact Corby Preus in the Center for Global Learning (x1275) to request an application.
 
Student Payroll will be Friday, October 11 for September work. Your electronic pay advice will be available at My.Luther on October 11. If you have a work credit plan, both your statement of account and your pay advice will be available on my.luther.edu

ELCA Global Mission will be at an information table outside of Marty's Cafe on Tuesday, October 8 from 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Stop by to visit with the representative about their career opportunities.

 

University of Minnesota (MBA Program) will have an information table in the Union lobby on Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Stop by if you are interested in their MBA program and want to learn more about it.

  

Reminder: There is no charge for nurse visits at Health Service.  There is a fee to see a provider. If you have testing or supplies, a fee will apply.

  

Luther College students are invited to submit abstracts for the 2014 National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Would you like to showcase your research at a national conference? Luther will provide support for selected students to present at NCUR. The conference will be April 3-5, 2014, at the University of Kentucky. Applications for the on-campus selection process are due by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2013. APPLY ONLINE.

  

Combining the sound of a clarinet with electroacoustic sounds created on a computer, Patrick O'Keefe and Scott Miller collaborate to showcase their project titled "Willful Devices," at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 10, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music. A Master Class will be given by O'Keefe at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 9, in the Sperati Band Room of Jenson-Noble.

On October 8, 2013 Joe Breitenstein,  Associate Professor of Psychology, will present "The 'Other' Is Us: The Stigmatization of Mental Illness." This is the first lecture in the 2013-14 Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture Series "Studying the 'Other."  The lecture is at
7 pm
 in the CRH. The lecture series is sponsored by the Paideia Endowment.

Interfaith Holiday Celebration: Eid al Adha Reception, 7 p.m. Sunday, October 13, in Peace Dining Room. Join the MSAA, IFSA, College Ministries and the Luther Diversity Center for light refreshments and a brief program celebrating the Muslim festival of Eid al Adha. Eid al Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, marks the end of the Hajj-the annual pilgrimage to Mecca-and celebrates Abraham's faithfulness and obedience to God. Jews, Christians, and Muslims look to Abraham as an example of faith.
 
Luther College Entrepreneurship Club is proud to announce its annual Richard Leake Elevator Pitch Competition-Wednesday October 9 in Olin 107 at 7:00 p.m. All students are welcome to compete. The winner will advance to represent Luther at the Collegiate Entrepreneurs' Organization National Conference in Chicago October 31-November 2 to compete for a grand prize of $3,500. Free counseling on campus.  The Counseling Service (Larsen Hall, lower level) offers confidential counseling for personal issues to enrolled students. There is no charge for these services. To make an appointment to see a counselor, stop by during weekday office hours: 

8 am to noon and 1-5 pm.

Christine Magnuson, world champion swimmer and Olympic medalist, will travel to Luther for the dedication and official opening of the college's Aquatic Center at 5 p.m. Friday, October 4. In addition to the ceremony, Magnuson will be on hand during the homecoming weekend, speaking to the swimming and diving teams, interacting with students and swimming in Luther's alumni meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, October 5.
