Thrity Umrigar, best-selling author of The Space Between Us, will present Luther College's 2013 Opening Convocation Lecture If Today Be SweetThursday, September 5 in the Center for Faith and Life Main Hall. There will also be a Q&A session and book signing Wednesday, September 4 at 7:30 p.m. Umrigar was born in Bombay, India and lived there until she came to the United States when she was 21.
 

Tani Diakite will be performing at 9:15 p.m. on September 5 in Marty's! The tickets are free with CAF and $5 without. Tani Diakite is a musical force who has inspired an entire community of artists. With his Kamale n'goni, a West African ancestor to the banjo, and his plaintive singing, he never fails to drop the deepest blues around. Sponsored by SAC Spotlight/Diversity.

 

Breaksk8 will be performing at 8:00 p.m. on Septemer 7 in the CFL. Tickets are free with CAF or $10 without. Breaksk8 has amazed audiences around the globe with their unique style of breakdancing on wheels. The group became a household favorite when the joined MTV's hit show "America's Best Dance Crew." The only crew on skates-Breaksk8 competed against the top 10 crews in the nation! New Luther ticketing system: Validate your account in the new Luther ticketing system at tickets.luther.eduAll faculty, staff, students and patrons of the ticket office received an email in August with their nontransferable login and password. All of your benefits for any Luther ticketed event (Christmas at Luther, student CAF) will be coded to this account, and it must be set up before any purchases can be made. Do not set up a new account. If you have any questions, contact the Luther College Ticket Office, 387-1357.

 
Are you interested in joining Food Council? Food Council is a student-lead advisory board to Dining Services. We are seeking new members for the 2013-2014 school year. 13-14 Distinguished Lectures: Anne Lamott, author of Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life and Help, Thanks, Wow, comes to Luther at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, September 28. Nicholas Carr, author of the The Atlantic article Is Google Making Us Stupid? and the recent book The Shallows: What the Internet is Doing to our Brains is the featured speaker at 9:40 a.m. (Convocation) and 7 p.m.(main lecture), Thursday, February 6. Seniors: Individual study carrels are again available for reservation on a first-come, first served basis in Preus Library. The carrels are located along the perimeter of the third floor and are assigned for personal use on a per-semester basis. Contact Eddy Atwell at [email protected] to request a senior carrel reservation for the fall. There are a limited number dedicated for this use.   
 

Luther College President David L. Tiede focused on challenges facing higher education and the college's strengths in meeting those challenges during his state of the college address August 29. The 2012 broadcast of Christmas at Luther: Tidings of Comfort and Joy has been nominated for a 2013 Upper Midwest Regional Emmy� Award in the category of "Special Event Coverage." This is the second nomination for the joint venture of the Luther College Music Department and Twin Cities Public Television (St. Paul, Minn.). The 2008 broadcast, Christmas at Luther: Night of Glory, Dawn of Peace,won the award for the same category back in 2009.  

 

Paul Torgerson and Sandy Lee, chair and vice-chair of the Board of Regents, have appointed Paul Esker '14, president of Student Senate, to the Presidential Search Committee.

 

Collegium Musicum, an ensemble dedicated to the performance and study of music of the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, invites singers and instrumentalists to try something new! Contact Kathy Reed to schedule an interview/audition this week.

 

Attention Students Registered for Private Music Lessons -- If you decide to drop lessons the following schedule will be used to compute the charge for fall 2013: Dropping lessons: by September 8- No charge; by September 15- $38 charge; by September 22- $76 charge; by October 1- $114 charge; after October 1- Full charge/$425. This schedule will be followed with NO EXCEPTIONS.

 

Award-winning authors Anne Lamott and Mark Salzman are the featured speakers at the 2013 The festival will offer workshops, panel discussions on craft, and readings in poetry, fiction and nonfiction.
