NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Reel Management talent agency president Marc Marcuse will present the Luther College SAC Leadership lecture at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in Olin 102. Marcuse's lecture, titled "Career Boot Camp," will focus on how to open up one's career path beyond the scope of their college major and build a worthwhile career.

 

ENLACES will be showing the documentary "abUSed" directed by Luis Argueta on April 11th, at 7:30pm in VALDERS 262. "Presents the devastating effects of US Enforcement Immigration policies on communities, families and children. The film tells the gripping personal stories of the individuals, the families and the town that survived the most brutal, most expensive and largest immigration raid in the history of the United States and serves as a cautionary tale of government abuses."

 

Join Professor Robin James in a discussion on the philosophy of contemporary musicians Lady Gaga, Rihanna and more in her talk, "Monstrosity & Damage as Human Capital in 'Gaga Feminism,'" at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in Olin 102.   

 

Robert Shedinger, associate professor of religion, will present a Luther College Religion Forum Lecture: 'Radically Open: Transcending Religious Identity in an Age of Anxiety' on Tuesday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. in Olin 102.

 

Luther College's Brass Ensembles will perform in concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in the Center for Faith and Life.The concert is open to the public with no charge for admission. The performance includes pieces by Luther's Mass Brass Ensemble, Horn Ensemble, Trombone Choir, Trumpet Ensemble and Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble. The concert will also feature Brad Schultz, Luther adjunct faculty in music, on the organ.  

 

Campus Climate Survey - Fill out by April 26 for a chance to win Sugar Bowl or Whippy Dip Ice Cream! The Diversity Council and Diversity Center are checking our campus "thermostat" by seeking YOUR input about ways to improve diversity related programs and services as well as evaluating the "climate" for all sorts of diversity on campus! Find it on the Diversity Center website under Your Feedback. Ice cream for the on-campus floor with the highest percentage of participants!   

 

Preus Library's annual National Library Week book sale will be held from Monday, April 15 to Friday, April 19. Hundreds of hardcover and paperback books will be available for purchase in the library. Prices will decline daily.  

 

The Pioneer Yearbook is looking for student workers for the 2013-2014 school year. Positions include editors and assistant editors. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Yearbook or newspaper experience is preferred, but not required. Congratulations to Sarah Thell and Joel Anderson! Sarah and Joel each won a $25 Luther College gift card that was given away during the Jenson Medal voting. Thanks to all the seniors that voted on-line or during the "Grad Finale" in the Union. The winner of the Jenson Medal Award will be announced at Commencement.

Be amazed! Join us Friday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the CFL for the Center Stage Series performance of MOMIX: Botanica, brought to you by the Performing Arts Committee. This show reveals nature's changing imagery through dance and visual illusion! Tickets are free with CAF and are available in the Box Office. MOMIX will also be hosting a workshop from 11 a.m.-12 in Studio 1 in the CFA. The workshop is free and open to all!

 

Public Screening of "Switch: Discover the Future of Energy," 7 p.m., April 10, Valders 206. Is fracking polluting our water? How dangerous is nuclear? Will we run out of oil? Can we clean up coal? Will renewables power our future? Get the straight answers to today's most important energy questions in this acclaimed new 98-minute documentary sponsored by the geological Society of America. 


Laurie Zaring, Luther College associate professor of linguistics and French, will present the Paideia Texts and Issues Lecture "Beauty is in the Ear of the Listener" at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, in the Center for Faith and Life Recital Hall on Luther campus. A reception will follow the lecture in Qualley Lounge.

Luther's Collegium Musicum will perform "Renaissance Folk," the ensemble's spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Noble Recital Hall. Collegium Musicum is an ensemble of instrumentalists and vocalists specializing in the music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods. Directed by Kathryn Reed, the ensemble will perform works of Henry Purcell, Robert Jones, Thomas Ravenscroft, Martin Peerson and the famous "anonymous."

Luther Athletes Serving Others (LASO) will sponsor "Take a Kid to the Game!" on Saturday, April 13th, 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. at Luther College's softball, tennis, and track events. LASO invites children to hang out with Luther athletes during the events. Free for area children. Sign-up in the Decorah Park and Rec office or email Alexis Dorschner, [email protected]. Children can check-in at 1:00pm at Circle Drive near Regents and be picked up at 3:00 p.m.   

 

The Career Center is accepting applications for a Career Assistant work study position for the 2013-14 academic year.  Interested students should submit a resume and cover letter to Carol Johnston by 5pm on Friday, April 12th.  Detailed job description is available in the Career Center.  Students entering their Junior year with 10 hours of work study are strongly encouraged to apply.

Callie Mabry of Fort Collins, CO, has been named a Udall Scholar. She was selected from a pool of 488 candidates nominated by 230 colleges and universities to receive the scholarship. A review committee selected this year's Udall Scholars on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, Native American health care or tribal public policy; leadership potential; academic achievement; and record of public service. Each Udall scholarship provides up to $5,000 for the scholar's education.

 

Throughout April, Luther College will be observe Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Campus-wide events to raise awareness include National Day of Outreach, "PELVIS," a movement workshop, "This Radiant Place," a guided movement explanation, Council Practice meetings and International Denim Day. Luther is also reassessing its campus policies in regard to sexual assault survivors and has recently opened the Luther College Center for Women and Gender Equality.
