FARWELL DISTINGUISHED LECTURE

Vandana ShivaCampus Programming is pleased to welcome Vandana Shiva for this spring's Farwell Distinguished Lecture, Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace - on Tuesday, February 26, at 7:00 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Shiva is one of the world's most respected environmental activists and feminists, advocating for a just and sustainable future through nonviolence, inclusion, and sharing of resources. All are also invited to join Shiva for a conversation in the CRH at 2:30 p.m. 
NEW ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Neela Bhattacharya Saxena, associate professor at Nassau Community College, N.Y., will present a Luther College Religion Forum Lecture at 
7 p.m. Thursday, February 28 in the Recital Hall of the Center for Faith and Life on the Luther campus. Her lecture, titled "Gynocentric India and Visions of Kali: A Liberatory Philosophical Praxis," will focus on the "Divine Feminine" of Indic culture and traditions. 
 

Sustainability Hosts Kick-Off Event for Annual Energy Competition! The Last Carnival on Earth (Free to attend!). What: A zombie-themed event with carnival games, relays, zombie face painting, crafts, food, and prizes. Where: SRC (The Sports and Recreation Center--Regents Center). When: Saturday, February 23rd, 6-8 p.m.

 

"A Wedding Story" is the theme for the 2013 Ethnic Arts Festival, on Saturday, March 2nd. Come learn and share at the Country Fair, in Oneota Market, 1:00-4:00 p.m., Ethnic Cuisine in Peace Dining Room, 4:30-6:30 p.m., and Entertainment at 7:00 p.m. in the CFL Main Hall. Tickets for Ethnic Cuisine available at the Luther Box Office: $12 for adults, $3 for children ages 5-10, and $5 for student with CAF.   


STUDY ABROAD with IFSA-Butler! A representative will be on campus on Thursday, February 21. Stop by her table outside of Marty's from 11-1 to visit about programs in Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, Latin America, Middle East, New Zealand.
 
Acclaimed by New York Concert Reviews as "both a virtuosic and a musicianly performer" Miko Kominami, Luther College adjunct faculty in music, will perform a "Bach and Rach" piano recital at 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 28, in the Noble Recital Hall of the Jenson-Noble Music Hall. Bach and Rach," will feature J.S. Bach's Partita in E minor for solo piano and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor. Xiao Hu, Luther assistant professor of music, will assist Kominami on piano.
  
Thinking about living in the Sustainability House or Norby Global House next year? There are still spaces available in these co-ed houses, so the application period has been extended until the rooms are full. Sustainability House has one space for men and one for women. Norby Global House has 2 double rooms for men and one triple room for women available. You do not need to be a senior to live in either house, so check out the application information on the Residence Life web page.   
 
Residence Hall Energy Competition-February 25-March 15. Reduce your energy and water use to win the competition, and attend Black-Out Events hosted by your Sustainability Reps! A $500 prize will be awarded to the Residence Hall who conserves the most electricity and water combined, 2nd place prize is $200. $10 Gift Cards to Decorah businesses will be awarded to one eligible student from each residence hall each week of the competition!  

Thank you to those Student Organizations who applied for funding from Student Senate. After being reviewed by the Co-Curricular committee and all of Student Senate, the allocation for Spring 2013 funding has been decided upon. The allocation of funding can be seen at http://www.luther.edu/studentsenate/proposal/  and is called "Allocation Student Senate Funding Spring 2013." The Diversity Center is hiring for fall 2013! Wanted- Applicants for the following positions: 1) International Student Assistants; 2) Multicultural Student Assistants; 3) Marketing/Publication Assistant; 4) Ethnic Arts Coordinator; 5) Peer Mentors (6) NOTE: 3 hours weekly, fall semester ONLY. Applications are now available for the Erdman Prize Competition at Luther College. This annual competition recognizes entrepreneurial activities that demonstrate the Luther student's ability to recognize and pursue a business opportunity without regard to required resources and to build "added value" beyond a personal salary. Prize money totaling $10,000 is awarded. This competition is only open to those who already have an established business. Submit applications to the Financial Aid Office by March 1, 2013.

This is the last portrait day we'll be having this year, so this is your last chance to get your picture in this year's full-color book.

Lenten Music Series--As part of this year's Lenten series--"Leading from Within: Reflections on Leadership from the Gospel of Luke"--choirs, ensembles, and others will offer music reflections each day in chapel.  Look for schedules posted around campus or sign up to receive an email reminder at Today in Chapel. Join us for Weekday Chapel, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the CFL Main Hall.
 

Brent Dodson, visiting assistant professor of music, will explore the influence of song and dance traditions in his trumpet recital at 7 p.m. Wednesday, February 20 in the Noble Recital Hall, Jenson-Noble Hall of Music.The event is open to all with no admission charge. The program will feature a variety of music, including works by Libby Larsen, Manuel de Falla, Eric Ewazen, Somei Satoh and Louis Armstrong.
