Sonoco Opens Door for Trane
Sonoco recently won business for an EPS molded foam component that goes inside the door of Trane's new Hyperion XL air handling unit. Trane typically uses automated machinery to fill the walls of their cabinet doors with urethane foam, but when a product re-design created an extra cavity within the door, this created a problem for Trane engineers because both the new design and the old design were still going to be used in manufacturing and would require different settings on the urethane foam machinery.
| Door with extra cavity |
| Door with EPS foam block in cavity | Sonoco's EPS foam component will be used to fill that cavity; which allows Trane to avoid adjusting settings on the urethane foaming equipment when they are building multiple door models at a time.

Sonoco AMP's Up Tooling
Aluminum Mold & Pattern (AMP), was just signed on as Sonoco's newest tooling vendor.
AMP is headquartered in Toronto, Ontario with a smaller, satellite operation in Saltillo, Mexico.
The Sonoco tooling coordinators visited the Toronto facility in early June and were pleasantly surprised to find a bigger shop than any of our existing tooling vendors.
The fact that AMP has an operation in Mexico is also a big asset due to our growth in the area and the completion of the new plant in Celaya at the end of 2013.

Putnam Recycling Initiatives
Almost all of the EPS plants within the Sonoco Protective Solutions network accept EPS for recycling. Truth be told, many plants could take back a lot more EPS than they currently do, but the volume just isn't coming in.
To combat this problem, the Putnam, Connecticut plant recently launched an effort to get the word out that Putnam CAN recycle EPS and is looking for more.
Milton Goncalves, Putnam plant manager, recently attended the ResilientCT seminar dedicated to energy efficiency and recycling in the state of Connecticut. He said, " I think it was worth making a personal connection with someone at the heart of the green initiative in CT."
On June 26, an ad was placed in Shopper Turnpike, a weekly circular sent out to residents and businesses in the Putnam area. Click HERE to see the cover page and Sonoco ad page of the latest issue.

Did You Know?
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam is one of Sonoco's main packaging materials. EPS Foam is resin code #6 and often mistakenly referred to as
Styrofoam®, which is actually a trademark of the Dow Chemical Company and is a blue panel insulation board.
To help fight some of the mis-perceptions out there about EPS foam, Sonoco is part of the EPS Industry Alliance.

Medical Design Blog
Sonoco Protective Solutions is working hard to establish a presence in the medical industry from participating in BioMED Device shows to presenting concepts to customers, and publishing content in trade journals like Medical Design Technology (MDT).
Recently, Jessica Irons, Marketing Specialist with Sonoco submitted a response to a question in the publication and it was published in the March 2013 issue.
The response is now getting more press by being posted on the MDT website blog.
