Did You Know?
Recently, New York City proposed a citywide ban on expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam such as coffee cups and takeout containers.
This is bad for Sonoco because, often, our primary EPS packaging material gets lumped in with those food service foam items and when cities aim to ban it, that could directly affect one of our core businesses.
To help fight this ban and to encourage NYC to instead find recycling programs, a website was launched by a member of the EPS Industry Alliance to educate consumers about how EPS foam recycling CAN and IS working in other places.

 Colorado Springs to ICF Fame
After the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma, a news station in Colorado did a story about the Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) blocks made in the Sonoco Colorado Springs plant. ICF's are a beneficial way to build homes in order to improve insulation, wind resistance, and energy efficiency.
Check out the video clip of the news story HERE.
One of the schools in the Oklahoma area that was affected by the tornados last month had minimal damage because it was being built with ICF's and this prompted the local governments to get a mandate that all new schools be built with ICF's.
Colorado Springs is one three Legacy Tegrant sites that makes ICF's, which consist of two walls of EPS foam held together with a plastic insert, at their facility. Concrete is then poured into the space between the two foam panels at the construction site. |
