Sonoco Protective Solutions Breaks Ground on New Molded Foam Plant in Central Mexico
This afternoon, Sonoco Protective Solutions held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the official start of construction for its new molded foam plant in Celaya Mexico. Government officials, several customers, members of the press and Sonoco employees attended today's event.
"In order to better serve our customers and capitalize on the tremendous growth that is occurring in the region, we made the decision to open a new, state of the art manufacturing facility in Celaya" Jeff Christensen, Commercial VP told the attendees. "Celaya was chosen due to its proximity to our customers, for its highly skilled workforce, access to transportation and major roads and for the universities and technical schools in the region that will be able to supply us trained resources for the years to come. It is hard to imagine, but in just a few short months, what is now a piece of vacant land will house a 65,000 square foot manufacturing plant that will utilize the very latest technology in the foam molding industry."
"Bringing more manufacturing jobs to Celaya is good news for the community and the people who live here," said Arq. Ismael Pérez Ordaz, Mayor of Celaya Town. "Sonoco has chosen well in deciding to locate its new plant in Celaya. The area's highly trained workforce and strong business climate make it a prime location for these types of jobs."
The facility in Celaya is currently under construction with production scheduled to begin by late 2013. Sonoco will invest up to $10.5 million in the new plant and will create more than 200 new manufacturing jobs when the plant is in full operation.
