Legacy PPD and Protexic Get On Board the Trane!

Nearly a year after the Sonoco acquisition, we are still finding places where we can leverage existing customer relationships to help grow the business and continue to delight our customers.

The legacy Protexic group originally sold EPP cushions for HVAC units to Trane (a division of Ingersoll Rand), while Legacy PPD did not have any business with Trane.

Due to corporate cost cutting initiatives, Trane changed the sheet metal structure to a thinner gauge and therefore reduced the strength of the unit.  This change caused the original EPP cushion design to fail.

In order to help the customer and keep the business, legacy Protexic worked with legacy PPD in the Nashville Engineering Lab where they were able to develop a hybrid solution that includes both EPP cushions and Sonoposts.

This solution worked for the customer and production will begin this October.  This is a $800,000 win for the new Sonoco Protective Solutions group and just the beginning of the possible relationships on which we can build.

'eXceptional' Win with BD Medical Device Packaging

Sonoco Protective Solutions recently won a packaging project for the FX model of Becton Dickinson's Instrumented Blood Culture System.  The BD website touts this device as having "fluorescent technology and 'eXceptional performance."  This system is a large medical testing device that tests for microbial growth in blood specimens.

The existing packaging for this product is a fabricated pack with corrugated, wood, and fabricated polyethylene foam.  The Sonoco engineers worked together to develop a Hybrid solution that includes four molded EPP cushions that work in tandem with four Sonoposts and a base pallet.  This re-design created a cost savings of 30-40% for BD.

The EPP cushions will be made in Butner, NC and the Sonoposts sourced from Nashville, TN for BD's Baltimore facility.  We hope that this is the first of many conversions of large medical products from a fabricated pack to a hybrid EPP/EPS and Sonopost solution.
Please contact Randy Kruska for more details.
Did You Know?

The website for Sonoco Protective Solutions is located under "Protective Packaging" off of Sonoco's Main Homepage.  If you've ever tried to give that link to someone, it's a long name!

To remedy that, the URL www.SonocoProtectiveSolutions.com has been created to take you directly to the Protective Packaging portion of Sonoco's website.  This URL is much easier to remember and you can give this out to clients for easy access to our site.

Also, Protexic's old website has been redirected to take you to the Protective Packaging page since the Protexic name will be phased out.  Now, when you type www.protexic.com into the web browser, it will take you directly to the Protective Packaging page instead of to the old Protexic website.
