Grass Seed Hazards

During the summer months, grasses and plants start to dry out and their barbed seeds begin to scatter.  Some of these seeds, including a species called "downy brome", can cause major problems for dogs.  They can get them caught in their paws, nostrils, ears, eyes, skin, and mouth.

These seeds have "one-way" barbs that allow the seed to work its way through the fur and then into the skin of the dog.  If they are not found and removed quickly, they can cause serious issues as they migrate further into the body and can be very painful to your pooch.

Below is a picture of what downy brome grass seeds look like. (While it looks harmless enough, don't let the soft appearance fool you.)

Whether your dog has been romping around your land at home or joining the fun at Chisholm Creek Pet Resort's pup park, please check your pet's: paw pads (especially between the toes), ears, nasal passages, eyes, and mouth  for these pesky little grass seeds.

Tips For Keeping Your Dog Cool In The Summer

As the weather kicks it up a notch, we pet owners need to take extra precautions to keep our furry friends cool during these hot summer months.

Below are some helpful tips:

1.  Keep your dog hydrated!  Pets can dehydrate quickly, so provide plenty of fresh, cool water throughout the day.

2.  Exercise your dog during the cooler parts of the day.

3.  Dogs absorb heat through their feet, so minimize the amount of time he/she is on hot asphalt, rocks, concrete, etc.

4.  Watch for signs of dehydration - rapid panting, excessive drooling, eyes appearing sunken and/or bloodshot, and might be noticeably slower-paced than normal.

5.  If your dog is outside, make sure it has plenty of access to shade and water.

6.  Dogs cool from the bottom up, so keep the paws and stomach cool.  A good idea to cool a dog down quickly is to put a cold, wet towel under your pet.

7.  Never leave your pet alone in a parked car.  On a hot day, a parked car can become a furnace in no time.

Want to make sure your dog stays cool during these hot days when running errands, at work, or going out of town?  All of Chisholm Creek Pet Resort's boarding suites are climate-controlled, so your pet will remain comfortable during any season of the year.

And, we have a pond, which makes any hot day an instant party!
