Tips For Calming Your Dog On July 4th
While we humans might like the loud noises and vibrant colors of fireworks to celebrate the 4th of July, our furry friends might not be so enthusiastic. Dogs experience the world through theirs senses - nose, eyes, and ears, and a 4th of July celebration can be downright overwhelming.
Here are a few tips to help keep your dog calm, making for an easier holiday for both of you.
1. Make sure your dog gets plenty of exercise earlier in the day.
2. Arrange to have your dog in a place where there won't be loud fireworks displays. If possible, keep the windows and curtains closed.
3. Provide a safe place inside for your dogs to retreat. When scared of sounds they can't orient, dogs often prefer small enclosed areas.
4. Make sure all your dogs are wearing ID tags with a properly fitting collar. (Dogs have been known to become Houdini around the 4th of July!)
5. Leave your dog something fun to do - like a frozen Kong filled with yummy treats.
6. Play calm music. It's most effective when the music is turned on well before the fireworks begin at a time when the dogs is already peaceful and relaxed. The music doesn't need to be loud to be effective as it has been clinically demonstrated to calm the canine nervous system.
7. A Thundershirt is an option as well. It's easy to put on, and is designed to appl a gentle hugging sensation to calm your dog. It's very similar to "swaddling" a newborn.
