New Major In Data Analytics
|
Data analytics is a new interdisciplinary major that applies fundamental scientific principles toward the analysis of large, complex data sets. The core focuses on computer sciences, mathematics and statistics along with the development of critical thinking and communication skills. Areas of specialization include biomedical informatics, business analytics, and computational analytics. Students will learn principles of data representation and big data management, software design and programming, and statistical modeling and analysis. The degree will open the door to nearly limitless career opportunities as companies increasingly seek employees with the skills to build and query large data sets and understand how to ask the right questions to extract critical, useable knowledge. Student Organization Highlight

Women in Math and Science Club (WIMS) unites women from various math and science branches to build camaraderie and share ideas. With funding from Shell Exploration and Production Company, WIMS annually hosts a visit and lecture by a distinguished woman in science. They also hold events for Girl Scouts and Columbus City School Girls. WIMS members socialize with members of their fellow sister, male and coed STEMM groups. Student Research Profile - Coral & Ocean Conditions

Casey Morrisroe Saup researched how climate change impacts the mortality of coral and how it may be possible to offset some of the damage due to rising temperatures. Through her research she was able to draw on her love of chemistry, explore interdisciplinary research and become involved in conservation efforts. Sullivant Hall Grand Opening
|
Join us on September 20 for a grand opening celebration and afternoon of activities honoring the transformation and renovation of Sullivant Hall. 12:30 p.m. - Ribbon-cutting ceremony and remarks from university leaders honoring the historical building and donors Lawrence and Isabel Barnett and their family. 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - Performances of Sullivant's Travels, a site-specific promenade performance work by director/choreographer Stephan Koplowitz featuring Ohio State students. 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. - Open houses hosted in ACCAD; Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy; Department of Dance; and the Lawrence and Isabel Barnett Center. Margot Gerritsen, associate professor, Energy Resources Engineering; and director of the Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering at Stanford University , will present Mathematical Tools Bring Hidden Beauty to Light. She will show that not only are linear algebra equations the core of science and engineering, they can also be turned into beautiful art.
