NSW gives public access to report illegal dumping at the click of a button
The general public can now report illegal dumping to the New South Wales government at the click of a button. A new RIDonline website allows the public to tag the GPS location of waste being dumped, attach a photo and describe the type of rubbish. The smartphone-accessible tool then notifies the Environment Protection Authority, councils and Regional Illegal Dumping squads to investigate and, if appropriate, issue fines or clean-up notices.Penalties can reach $15,000 and potential jail time for anybody caught illegally dumping within five years of a prior illegal dumping conviction. RIDonline has been available to the EPA, councils, RID squads and public land managers since September last year. It is now available to the public at
The online tool is part of the NSW government's five year, $58 million plan to tackle illegal dumping.

Fairfax media's Daniella Miletic tells the story of "a clever volunteer at a Brunswick opportunity shop who pulls a painting out of the store's 'giving bin' and is taken aback by how beautiful it is."

On investigation, the painting Spearhead Dreaming, signed by ochre artist Marcia Purdie, was valued by an auction house at $1800.

"What I think was really amazing is that this beautiful donation will go to helping our community ... and we are trying to honour this beautiful donation that someone has given us to help the community and people in need," says Vinnies' Brunswick op shop manager Shauna Patterson.

Pictured at right, Carmel Miller shows off the painting donated to the Vinnies Sydney Rd Brunswick op shop.
