Towards a More Collective Response: NetHope

NetHope has recently issued an appeal for funding to improve communications regarding the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. NetHope's efforts are focused on (1) improving communications capabilities in the region and (2) information sharing between the emergency response organizations in the region. Initial field assessments show that the current infrastructure cannot handle the amount of data and communication necessary for an effective, collective response to the outbreak.

As of October 19, there are an estimated 9,911 cases in the West African countries of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Of these cases, an estimated 4,868 have ended in deaths.
The number of cases are multiplying exponentially; currently, there are an estimated five new people becoming infected every hour.
There is some good news in the region. On October 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Senegal free of Ebola.
On October 20, the WHO declared Nigeria free of Ebola. The overwhelming cooperative response in Nigeria and Senegal are hailed as success stories for other infected areas
