Global Reach of Technology

The first "modern" computers were released in the 1970s. From there, computer technology moved rapidly; by the 1990s, many families in the U.S. and Europe were purchasing computers for their home personal internet usage.

Today, computers and internet technology play a key role in accelerating humanitarian development and relief efforts around the world.

DID YOU KNOW...

Light Bulb Idea

Laptop theft is the second most common crime, and it more than doubled over the past year.

81% of U.S. firms lost laptops with sensitive data in the past year.

More than 70% of laptop thefts occur in cars and coffee shops.

Tens of thousands of laptops are lost in airports every week; only about 1/3 are ever returned to their owners.

Basic Security Tips

In this day and age, the statistics show that thieves and computer hackers are rampant. IPA recommends gathering advice for practical ways to protect your technology. Here are some tips we have uncovered:

  • Patch - Have your computer set up for automatic software and operating system updates.
  • Protective Software - Install virus protection software.
  • Passwords - Choose passwords with a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Also, select settings that require password entry every time your computer turns on, comes out of sleep mode or screensaver.
  • Public Access - Avoid it if possible; use Virtual Private Network instead. If necessary to use a public network, erase your tracks, do not save your log on info, and do no enter sensitive information.
  • Proper Backup - Back up your computer regularly with an external hard drive or to secure cloud storage.
