Charlemont & the Queen
What the Marquis of Queensbury was to English boxing, Joseph Charlemont was to boxe francaise (an off-shoot of savate). His renown was so great in the 19th century that he performed an exhibition match in 1887 in London in honor Queen Victoria's Jubilee celebration. This demonstration was part of a fighting arts demonstration that included several notable English boxers. The journal The Sporting Life reported it as 'A Jubilee Assault at Arms.'
"Last evening a select and aristocratic company, including Lord Aylesford, several ladies, and prominent members of the theatrical and musical profession, assembled at St. James' Hall, to witness a very excellent exhibition of boxing and various athletic exercises under the management of Mr. J. Fleming, with Jack Harper and Bob Habbijam as M.C.'s. The entertainment was quite in keeping with the respective reputations of the performers, notably veteran Jem Mace, and Lees, the champion of Australia, who gave an admirable exposition of the art without fear or favour. The feats by the St. James' Athletic members, and Fred Badon were also duly appreciated, likewise the Parisian kickers armed with gloves, both of whom created great enthusiasm and laughter. They were recalled."
Mace, Lees, and Charlemont at work under one roof in one evening. Looved to have seen that.
