Here's a sneak-peek of what you're missing out on as a member of the RAW Crew/Vale Alliance. I hope you enjoy giving some of these drills a shot, and if you'd like to come aboard the team-Be Proud to Have You!
Combat Drills of the Week
Theme: Hardihood
We often train as if we are going to perform in optimum conditions, in optimum health, in optimum circumstances, and yet we know that simply will not be the case-particularly in the real-world survival realm. As Nassim Taleb points out "Nature is not smooth" and with that in mind let's "un-smooth" our training for the week.
Choose as many Drills that fit your goal trajectory.
Boxing: Spend 5 3-minute rounds on the heavy-bag with no gear whatsoever. No gloves, no hand-wraps, zilch. Observe what adjustments you make in light of this.
I ask for 5-rounds because some may bang with abandon in one or two rounds, but let's see what happens if you start skinning knuckles, will that wild abandon stick around?
Wrestling: All this week lose your gear while wrestling (drills and scrimmage.) No cup, no knee sleeves, no rash-guards, no whatever prop you regularly wear that makes you feel "ready" to roll.
And...get off the mat. Doesn't have to be concrete (doesn't not have to be either) but it can't be a soft surface designed to make the sport easier.
Real-World Survival: All un-armed reality drills this week are to be conducted with zero safety gear and on hard surfaces. Do not use this as an excuse to bang full-contact but as a reminder of "Hmm" perhaps what I thought was wise is less than wise if I don't have-----."
Real-World Flight: Hit this one over the course of two separate training days.
Day 1: Wearing dress clothes (dress shoes included) hit 8 50 yards sprints in this garb.
Your rest is the walk back.
Day 2: You may don your workout clothes but...lose the shoes. Hit 8 50-yards sprints barefoot.
Your rest is the walk back.
Dexterity Work: Grab a bucket of water, pour some ice in it. Have these other items on hand as well: Cup full of loose change (at least 100 coins of all denominations), a length of rope, and a pair of tweezers.
Drill 1: Dump the change and mix it well. Plunge your hands into the water for 1 minute. Then separate the change into stacked denominations as rapidly as possible.
Drill 2: Mix the change and repeat the 1 minute plunge. Separate the change again, this time using the tweezers.
Drill 3: Tie several tight unwieldy knots in the length of rope. Hit the 1 minute plunge and go to work untying the knots.
Cognitive Work: For this one you'll need a cheap pair of off the-rack-reading glasses. If you already have reading glasses grab some that are not your prescription-we want you blurry.
Grab a book and spend a minimum of an accumulated 15 minutes "reading. Enjoy the unusual fatigue as your eyes works hard to correct for resolution.
Extra-Credit: Pick one "luxury" item you use on a regular basis and make a commitment to forgo it for the week. This can be cell phone, air-conditioning, television, what have you. Just make sure you have selected something that you standardly use.
