Hey Crew,

It's Friday and time for this week's Legends newsletter;
buncha stuff today...

1-We will be on vacation October 2nd-11th so correspondence and mail-outs during that time will be slow. Trust that we will get everything up to speed ASAP upon our return. Thanks for your patience!

2
-I received word that our next Paladin release will be Dirty Boxing. Details to come in the near future.

3
-Speaking of vacation-If you have a school or club in the Tampa/St.Pete area and would like to host a laid-back seminar from a vacationing old man, message me and if the dates/times work between my vigorous bouts of napping in hammocks perhaps we can play.

4-Check out the
Info on this month's RAW in the next block.

5
-This week's article is a little observation on boxing and the late film actor Charles Bronson. We old folks out there will appreciate it.

6-
This week's Video Clip has poor audio but if you bear with it you'll see how to use your little ol' thumb to make sitting inside the guard a little less of a chore, and as a bonus we see how to use the elbow as a slice and not as a pry to split the legs. Big thanks to Coach Mike Flowers of the Dawghouse Gym for the use of the legs!

And last, but not least, check out the ESP RAW Subscription service info to your left. You can save yourself some money on this volume of RAW ($5.50 to be exact) and pick up 3 more volumes of RAW absolutely free.

Thanks everyone and have a great weekend!
Sincerely,

Mark Hatmaker

Integrated Curriculum Vol. 6

The 6th of the improved format includes:
  • 20-GPP Combat Specific Conditioning Challenges.
  • We will be using the 6-Tiered MAX O2 Package introduced on RAW 153 on a daily basis to build Maximum Fuel Tanks.
  •  We add daily All-Round Strength & General Power Training, Combat Somatotrophics, & Fight Specific Agility Drills to maximize our conditioning time.
  • Among the fun challenges: Lots of bridge work, agility rolls, bob & weave rope drills, and speed sprawl/pop-up & sprint circuits.
  • This volume also has 16 Boxing Drills our focus on this volume is building immediate counter-punching off of using the Snap-Back as a Defense.
  • We also start using that combat arm drag to set up our double leg series.
  • We'll cover how to react if your combat drag is resisted High or Low and which version of the Double-Leg to bang for each contingency.
  • Just as important as your double-leg is how you hit the mat post-double. Do it right and you can avoid a lot of bottoms scissors headaches. We'll hit two drilling options here with the Sprint & Fling.
  • We also hit 10 Mat-Work Drills to build facility with the very fluid Cockle-Burr Ride.
  • We'll discuss using the Butterfly Pin to keep your opponent flat.
  • Using the Dig & Power Half to create Hook and Neck Exposure.
  • Setting up a slamming home the Rip-Out Double Wrist-Lock (DWL).
  • Two ways to Cram a DWL Hold-Out.
  • We'll hit a so evil it should be illegal Reverse Lever Cross-Face.
  • And as icing on the cake use a non-travelling cross-face for a tap that requires almost zero-effort.
  • As a bonus-we'll hit how to use that Dig we've been wearing out to open up an ocean of possibilities that lead to beaucoup arm/shoulder/neck & spine locks.

Man, I love this volume! We're finally getting out of the basics weeds into the mean, mean, meanness of the old school combination masters-what's not to love?

This volume (as with all volumes of RAW) comes with a printed syllabus for inclusion in your training notebook.

ESP RAW 155 can be had this month for $32 (S & H included--Domestic & International) at the end of the month the price goes to $42 Domestic/$52 International. [Of course, it's only $26.50 for the RAW Crew.]

Bronson & Fisticuffs
Mark Hatmaker

This is a short but sweet look at film star Charles Bronson and his screen displays of boxing. For the young or uninitiated Charles Bronson was (in the right role) one of the Mt. Rushmore of film cool, up there with Steve McQueen, Lee Marvin, and Paul Newman. What's more is that Mr. Bronson was action-hero fit before any film actor was action hero fit.

Sure you had Steve Reeves with his sword and sandals flicks, but Bronson was all natural real deal fit and what's of interest to us (well, me at least) was his use of boxing training to get to where he was.

To take a gander at Mr. Bronson throwing his hands have a look-see at the 1975 film Hard Times (Currently on Amazon Prime) written and directed by Walter Hill who gets the depression-era hard times vibe down pat. In this film we see Bronson play a bare-knuckle prize-fighter just trying to make a living. When you have a look at the film keep in mind Bronson was 54-years-old at the time.

To see an earlier version of Bronson in the ring, look to the very first episode of his 1956 television series Man With a Camera (Currently on Hulu.) In this inaugural episode we see a 35-year-old Bronson don boxing gloves and move around the ring.

Filmic boxing is tough to evaluate but there is no denying the authority on the jab we see in both Hard Times and Man With a Camera, the footwork looks clean, the hands are mighty low but that might be artistic choice to keep the actor visible.

For fans of the actor or of boxing itself both are fine viewing experiences.

Places to Go; People to See

We'll be in St. Louis on December 5th for our team-up with Danny Hoskins and the Native American Warrior Arts Crew for some blade-work with Danny, rough and tumble from me, and Rik Brown will be there as well swinging some bad-ass mace.

We'd love to come out your way.  If you'd like us to come to you, see our Pick An Adventure sidebar and we may just come to you far cheaper than you'd imagine (I'm easy when it come to new friends and fun stuff.)

Pick An Adventure
Seminars
Some of us are old-enough to remember a series of interactive books where readers were asked to make a decision and then go to a corresponding page to see what sort of mess you got yourself into. You never quite knew where you were going to wind up with these books--pre-video game era, these were a novel idea.

Here's where you come in, if you'd like to host a seminar and save yourself some bucks off of the standard fees in the process--if you've got an Adventure Race in your area, a rock you think I'd like to climb, a river you think I want to raft, a hike you think I just need to take, a desert I've not run on, you get the idea--pitch your adventure and school location. If the adventure appeals and the logistics are right we offer greatly reduced fees to come to your school and play with your crew before we go play at your Adventure Pitch.

BTW--You and your crew are welcome to attend the adventure, as a matter of fact, we'll knock off even more bucks for this sort of hands-on guiding.

So, you got some adrenaline in your neck-of-the-woods and want to train? Feel free to make your pitch and we'll see what happens.
