Hey Crew,

It's Friday and time for this week's Legends newsletter;
buncha stuff today...

First--Info on this month's RAW- Part 4 of our new and improved Integrated RAW Program. Mucho details below!

Second-Big shout of thanks to Coaches Chris Martindale & Mike Flowers and all the Dawg House Crew in Charleston, WV! Proud to have this gym of hard-chargers and good people as part of the crew!

Third-This week's Video Clip Coach Mike Flowers of the Dawg House gym assists in me in showing the importance of snugging the knee to the hips immediately following any and all cross-body breakdowns. Thanks, Mike! Next time some white-water rafting and guitar pickin'!

Fourth-This week's article is a two-fer...
1. It features one of our old-school trivia questions originally posted in the Private RAW Crew Forum-I think you'll get a kick out of this one.

2. There is a conditioning challenge tied to the trivia question-if you try it let me know how it goes.

Fifth-A Poll Question-Coach Bill Whitworth and I are pondering rolling out Level 1 of our Western Warrior Boot Camps this Fall. The Camp will feature plenty of old school boxing & wrestling plus team conditioning and obstacle challenges culled from warrior cultures of the past (Think Spartans, Celts, Comanches, and the like).

The question is, if this sounds up your alley let us hear it and we'll get to work on dates and details ASAP.
Well, does it sound like more fun than a warrior should be allowed to have?

What say you?

And last, but not least, check out the ESP RAW Subscription service info to your left. You can save yourself some money on this volume of RAW ($5.50 to be exact) and pick up 3 more volumes of RAW absolutely free.

Thanks everyone and have a great weekend!
Sincerely,

Mark Hatmaker

Integrated Curriculum Vol. 5:
Building the Base

The 5th of the improved format includes:

  • 21-GPP Combat Specific Conditioning Challenges.
  • We will use the 6-Tiered MAX O2 Package introduced on RAW 153 in an alternating fashion now as we add All-Round Strength & General Power Training, Combat Somatotrophics, & Fight Specific Agility Drills to maximize our conditioning time.
  • We offer 21-Days of Combat Specific Training on this volume. Among the new drills detailed on the DVD: Speed Sprawls to Pop-Ups, Rotational Rowing, Partial 1-Hand Chins, Shoulder Bridge Presses, Hang-Clean Turn & Press, and the Wrist-Held Pull-Ups for some crazy strength. Stick with it Crew-as we progress thru the system you're going to see some serious old school gains!
  • This volume also has 13 Separate Boxing Drills detailing how to build power and utilize the formerly legal pugilism blow the "chopper" in your street work...
  • We'll cover three drills for building Body Shot Tolerance covering two conflicting tactics by old school boxers. We'll tell you how to execute each body-toughening tactic and then let the drill decide for you which one is right for you.
  • And we'll hit a slid 8 Rounds of Drilling working the Heart Punch-a very unsettling blow to take.
  • We'll hit 12 Roundsof Clinch Drills Building to what we've been aiming for starting with RAW 150-we'll run the Long Pummel, the Short Pummel, and the Body Cross Chain as one continuous upper-body control drill. This is worth the price of admission and gets you out of the over-under pummeling mediocrity.
  • In this volumes mat-work section we use Dig Nelsons to set-up Double-Wrist-Locks, Short-Arm-Scissors (Including a sweet variant passed on by Coach Mike Flowers-thanks, Mike!), we'll hit Crook-Lifts vs. the Buried Arm and wrap up this 16-Rounds of Mat-Work with the criminally under-used Double-Over Double Wrist-Lock-good luck catch-gripping a stop on this one.

Man, I love this volume! We're finally getting out of the basics weeds into the mean, mean, meanness of the old school combination masters-what's not to love?

This volume (as with all volumes of RAW) comes with a printed syllabus for inclusion in your training notebook.

ESP RAW 154 can be had this month for $32 (S & H included--Domestic & International) at the end of the month the price goes to $42 Domestic/$52 International. [Of course, it's only $26.50 for the RAW Crew.]

The Father of the Dumbbell
Mark Hatmaker

Old School Trivia Time: What early boxing heavyweight was credited with being the inventor of the dumbbell?

And the Old School Trivia Answer is...Tom Owens. He gained the championship on November 14, 1796 after a 50 round battle with William Hooper. Owens came upon the heels of the Great Daniel Mendoza era and never received the same attention as the vaunted former champion.

Owens did finally face the legendary Mendoza in 1820 and won in 12-rounds.
Both men were no longer at prime fighting age but it is remarkable all the same that they were still fighting-Get this, Owens was 52-years-old at the time of the bout, Mendoza 56.

Giants in those days my friends.

A Tom Owens Inspired WOD.
Grab 2 of Owens invention (25#/20#/15#-scale for weight class). Don't let that low weight fool you.

Set your timer for 30s intervals.
* Do 30s of push-presses
* Rest 30s [You will "rest" with the DBs held overhead.]
X's 3
Then immediately launch into 3 3-minute rounds of banging the heavy bag.
Let me know how that low weight felt at the end of this 12m total workout.

Places to Go; People to See

We'd love to come out your way.  If you'd like us to come to you, see our Pick An Adventure sidebar and we may just come to you far cheaper than you'd imagine (I'm easy when it come to new friends and fun stuff.)

Pick An Adventure
Seminars
Some of us are old-enough to remember a series of interactive books where readers were asked to make a decision and then go to a corresponding page to see what sort of mess you got yourself into. You never quite knew where you were going to wind up with these books--pre-video game era, these were a novel idea.

Here's where you come in, if you'd like to host a seminar and save yourself some bucks off of the standard fees in the process--if you've got an Adventure Race in your area, a rock you think I'd like to climb, a river you think I want to raft, a hike you think I just need to take, a desert I've not run on, you get the idea--pitch your adventure and school location. If the adventure appeals and the logistics are right we offer greatly reduced fees to come to your school and play with your crew before we go play at your Adventure Pitch.

BTW--You and your crew are welcome to attend the adventure, as a matter of fact, we'll knock off even more bucks for this sort of hands-on guiding.

So, you got some adrenaline in your neck-of-the-woods and want to train? Feel free to make your pitch and we'll see what happens.
