Hey Crew,

It's Friday and time for this week's Legends newsletter;

First--Info on this month's RAW-#154, it's chockfull of old school boxing, wrestling, and conditioning goodness.

Second-A reminder that we'll be playing with Coach Chris Martindale and the Dawg House Crew in Charleston, WV this Saturday the 8th. Contact Coach Chris for details at 304-395-3609.

Third-In this week's Video Clip, my man Felix Bernatchez of uber-Coach Kris Iatskevich's formidable crew helps me demo a head-snap to floating sweep. Ura, Felix!

Fourth-This week's article is a bit of old school trivia that reminds us that what's new is old and let's get down to the Two G's of Grit & Gumption!

And last, but not least, check out the ESP RAW Subscription service info to your left. You can save yourself some money on this volume of RAW ($5.50 to be exact) and pick up 3 more volumes of RAW absolutely free.

Thanks everyone and have a great weekend!

Integrated Curriculum Vol. 5:
Building the Base

The 5th of the improved format includes:

  • 21-GPP Combat Specific Conditioning Challenges.
  • We will use the 6-Tiered MAX O2 Package introduced on RAW 153 in an alternating fashion now as we add All-Round Strength & General Power Training, Combat Somatotrophics, & Fight Specific Agility Drills to maximize our conditioning time.
  • We offer 21-Days of Combat Specific Training on this volume. Among the new drills detailed on the DVD: Speed Sprawls to Pop-Ups, Rotational Rowing, Partial 1-Hand Chins, Shoulder Bridge Presses, Hang-Clean Turn & Press, and the Wrist-Held Pull-Ups for some crazy strength. Stick with it Crew-as we progress thru the system you're going to see some serious old school gains!
  • This volume also has 13 Separate Boxing Drills detailing how to build power and utilize the formerly legal pugilism blow the "chopper" in your street work...
  • We'll cover three drills for building Body Shot Tolerance covering two conflicting tactics by old school boxers. We'll tell you how to execute each body-toughening tactic and then let the drill decide for you which one is right for you.
  • And we'll hit a slid 8 Rounds of Drilling working the Heart Punch-a very unsettling blow to take.
  • We'll hit 12 Roundsof Clinch Drills Building to what we've been aiming for starting with RAW 150-we'll run the Long Pummel, the Short Pummel, and the Body Cross Chain as one continuous upper-body control drill. This is worth the price of admission and gets you out of the over-under pummeling mediocrity.
  • In this volumes mat-work section we use Dig Nelsons to set-up Double-Wrist-Locks, Short-Arm-Scissors (Including a sweet variant passed on by Coach Mike Flowers-thanks, Mike!), we'll hit Crook-Lifts vs. the Buried Arm and wrap up this 16-Rounds of Mat-Work with the criminally under-used Double-Over Double Wrist-Lock-good luck catch-gripping a stop on this one.

Man, I love this volume! We're finally getting out of the basics weeds into the mean, mean, meanness of the old school combination masters-what's not to love?

This volume (as with all volumes of RAW) comes with a printed syllabus for inclusion in your training notebook.

ESP RAW 154 can be had this month for $32 (S & H included--Domestic & International) at the end of the month the price goes to $42 Domestic/$52 International. [Of course, it's only $26.50 for the RAW Crew.]

Barns, Pit-Bulls, Heavy Bags, & the 2 G's
Mark Hatmaker

In the Private RAW Crew Facebook forum we run a series of old school pugilism & historical wrestling trivia questions every week because it's fun, stretches the historical muscles, and allows us glimpses into what came before us and remind ourselves, paraphrasing Newton, that "We stand on the shoulders of giants."

At the least the questions seek to entertain or educate, at best we seek to be inspired-to do. For example today's offering from that RAW Crew forum reminds me that we often look to the newest, the bestest piece of training gear or workout clothing and lose sight of the fact that when it comes down to it-very little is new, or more importantly needed except you and the two G's: Grit and Gumption.

Old School Trivia Time: What early boxing heavyweight was one of the 1st to use a "heavy bag" to build punching power (his power was considered formidable)?

No Googling--only your memory or actual hardcopy resources in your possession. If you think you know it post your answers.
......
Again, kill those search engines and let's see what we really know....
Tomorrow the answer, and a little background on this innovator's training and the exact weight and construction of his bag.

And the Old School Trivia answer is John C. Heenan the American heavyweight champion (his career beginning in the late 1850's pre-dates Corbett and Sullivan.) Newspaper accounts of Heenan remark upon his power, endurance, and work ethic.
He fought a historic battle with the English champion Tom Sayers (a story for another day) but to stay on topic for this question-he was an early adopter of using the dumbbell to build strength and one of the 1st early boxers to avidly use a... "heavy bag."
His was a canvas bag filled with 30 pounds of sand.

In the illustration below you'll see a representation of one of Heenan's training "barns" while in England preparing for the Sayers match. This barn was in Haram, Wiltshire.
In the illustration we see Heenan and his trainer Jack Macdonald inspecting the bag in question. Note in the foreground the gloves for sparring (this was the bare-knuckle era), and the two wooden maces for strength training.
The chained pit bull was protection against Sayers' confederates tampering with his gear.
I'd time machine to that barn in a heartbeat if I could.

Pick An Adventure
Seminars
Some of us are old-enough to remember a series of interactive books where readers were asked to make a decision and then go to a corresponding page to see what sort of mess you got yourself into. You never quite knew where you were going to wind up with these books--pre-video game era, these were a novel idea.

Here's where you come in, if you'd like to host a seminar and save yourself some bucks off of the standard fees in the process--if you've got an Adventure Race in your area, a rock you think I'd like to climb, a river you think I want to raft, a hike you think I just need to take, a desert I've not run on, you get the idea--pitch your adventure and school location. If the adventure appeals and the logistics are right we offer greatly reduced fees to come to your school and play with your crew before we go play at your Adventure Pitch.

BTW--You and your crew are welcome to attend the adventure, as a matter of fact, we'll knock off even more bucks for this sort of hands-on guiding.

So, you got some adrenaline in your neck-of-the-woods and want to train? Feel free to make your pitch and we'll see what happens.
