No Second Chance: Pre Assault Indicators
Jim Marx
The priority of our No Second Chance training focuses on avoidance/fleeing. Using your situational awareness will help you maintain an awareness of safety around you. Your No Second Chance training should also include the ability to recognize body language, trusting your instincts, and reacting decisively when your life depends on it.
Before a physical attack occurs, people typically telegraph the attack by displaying unconscious body language they are unaware of. These are called Pre Assault Indicators. This happens involuntarily when we humans are in fight or flight mode. You can READ the attack before it happens if you are aware of the Indicators.
By being able to recognize the pre-assault indicators you will increase your reaction time to avoid and escape an attack or other dangerous situation. When you observe these Pre Assault Indicators you should engage in your pre planned escape strategy ASAP. If you are unable to escape, go into combat mode and handle the situation then escape.
It is through your situational awareness that you can recognize these Pre Assault Indicators and adjust your actions to deal with the situation. When you recognize Pre Assault Indicators you need to ACT, do not ignore them for any reason, and prepare yourself for the attack that is about to happen. This will also give you the opportunity to stop an attack by giving you time to draw or pick up X weapon. No Second Chance by Mark Hatmaker. If you wait for 100% confirmation that the attack is going to happen, you will end up being attacked. That is why your No Second Chance training has to include Situational Awareness Training and Chaos Drills. Part of situational awareness is knowing the Pre Assault Indicators.
I will list the most common Pre Assault Indicators for you to study and learn, and this will allow you to foresee the future. You will be able to see the attack before it happens.
Pre Assault Indicators:
I will list the most common (the 80%ers). I will start with the Pre Assault Indicators that you are able to observe at a distance, giving you ample time to escape the situation, draw or pick up X weapon, or as a last resort use unarmed combative techniques.
1. Tracking/Stalking- for our definition this is when someone is following you at a distance and monitoring your movements, as they gradually close the distance on you, usually coming at you from an angle.
2. Eye tracking-when someone is watching you too intently and monitoring your movements and actions, not necessarily stalking you.
3. Pre Assault Investigation - when someone approaches you entering your safety boundaries, even sometimes bump you or touch you, to assess your awareness and your apparent willingness and ability to set your boundaries and fight back.
4. Excessive talking and/or questioning- when someone seems like they are being too friendly or nosy when they don't even know you, and they have no need to know.
5. Indications of mental illness - when people are talking to themselves or others inappropriately, their actions are inappropriate.
6. Signs of drug or alcohol impairment.
The following are the Pre Assault Indicators that usually happen when you are face to face with someone, and the attack is imminent. These are what I found to be the most common, there are other Pre Assault Indicators however in my opinion, they take more training and are geared for the professional security personal. These are the 80%ers.
1. Before physical action by an aggressor occurs, that individual usually begins by threatening to attack, in an attempt to intimidate the opponent and to psych themselves up. This process commonly called posturing or ritualized combat.
2. Verbal aggression - yelling, swearing, etc.
3. A change in posture - stands taller, sets head and shoulders, moves away/moves closer, points, forms fist and/or loads the arm. Head will come down, chin tucked, eyebrows tightened and dropped.
4. Individual's stance changes - blades body, lowers center of gravity.
5. Individual may bob or rock and sway.
Numbers 3-5 is also how someone acts to ready themselves for a combative sporting event.
6. Removing articles of clothing, such as glasses, hats, coats, shirts.
7. Adjusting clothing, such as pulling up the on the pants pulling up sleeves.
8. Target and weapon glancing- shifting eyes to possible targets and weapons they will attack or use.
9. Hands will open and close. The hands will comb their hair, or touch their face.
10. Aggression redirected to something or someone else, such as breaking pencils, kicking, chairs, yelling at bystanders.
As humans when the fight or flight response is triggered, these Pre Assault Indicators can predict an attack, the person just cannot stand still due to the "chemical dump" of the fight or flight response. Using your situational awareness and some observational practice you should be able to read an attack before it happens.
This knowledge along with your situational awareness will give you the "GO" signal, giving you permission to ACT so you don't become a victim. But you must ACT!
Remember YOU are your first line of defense!
