Keep Your Eyes on the Road
Mark Hatmaker
Roadwork. I'm not a fan but boxers, wrestlers, fighters of all ilk have sworn by it for years as a great conditioner-and there is no doubt about it, it will increase your wind. But, if you're anything like me, how do you get yourself motivated to do something that you abhor? (I'm serious, I can't abide running). We're talking overcoming inertia that even a fully-loaded iPod or MP3 player can't seem to fix. Well, I find what helps me is to build on an idea from the legendary Mr. Frank Gotch.
Old school boxers and wrestlers were doing roadwork long before the fitness cadre embraced it in the '70s. Gotch logged in long hours of roadwork but, he always professed that rather than run with the head up taking in the scenery or, worse, getting trapped inside your own head, he preferred to run with his head down and eyes on the road. He felt that you shouldn't merely just put one foot in front of the other but choose your steps. By running in this manner he felt that it kept you engaged with what you were doing and kept the intellectual component fully activated during what, for many, is nothing more than an automatic chore.
Many have taken Gotch's advice to heart (myself included) and have found that head down/eyes on the road does indeed seem to remedy some of the tedium. But, for those who have chosen running tracks or cleared running paths there may be less to engage our intellect than we may like and we can find ourselves returning to finding the whole endeavor a chore yet, again. But, if we alter our terrain/environment we can increase the demands made of both the mind and body.
Those who are proponents of trail-running (wilderness trails-uneven terrain, logs to breach, creeks to ford, et cetera) find that this form of running is far more engaging intellectually as you must use the Gotch eyes-down protocol or else a fall is inevitable. The variety in terrain adds to the conditioning component as the terrain dictates body movement (forced crouching, jumps, leaps, stride changes, and the like) as opposed to you choosing such changes at your own whim. I have found that keeping my eyes on the road along with utilizing nature trails, wilderness paths, or even unusual urban runs takes what was normally a chore and has turned it into a bit of a game. Once the joy of movement comes back into play, the desire to push one self is increased and the rewards are great.
Thanks for the advice, Mr. Gotch.
