Editor's Desk

Why had these words mysteriously appeared in the second floor window, above the main entrance to CMHC? I pictured the madcap author, late at night, hunched in front of a computer screen, struggling to find the largest possible font size for a single page, printing the letters one by one, carefully taping them to the glass.
I finally tracked him down.
"I can't be trusted with plants," he laughed. "I didn't want my window ledge to turn into a graveyard for uncared-for vegetation."
Suddenly he got serious. "I did it for the cancer patients," he said.
From his window Ed Renaud, PhD, LCSW, CMHC's Associate Director of Clinical Services, sees people walking the hallways of Smilow Cancer Center, directly across the street from CMHC. Some wear hospital gowns. Others push IV poles.
"You're not spending time in that building unless you're having a hard time," he reflects. "I wanted to send that message to them."
Never give up. It's a message, he says, for everyone at CMHC too, "but mainly, it was for the person walking down the Smilow hallway."
Mike Sernyak, MD, CEO of CMHC, has said he wants to bring "community" back into "community mental health." It starts by looking outside.
Where are you? What do you see?
What words would you tape to your window?
