Compatibility Mode in Microsoft Office

When you open a document created in an older version of Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint in a modern version of Office, you may see "Compatibility Mode" appear after the name of the document in the title bar. While this is not something you should usually worry about, it changes the way the document appears and prevents you from using some modern features.

Modern versions of Microsoft Office have introduced new features that aren't compatible with older versions of Microsoft Office. Modern versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint also handle document formatting a bit differently from older versions. When you create a new document in Office 2013 or 2016, it's created as a modern document with access to all these new features and the latest formatting styles.

Compatibility Mode is intended to ensure users of different versions of Microsoft Office can continue working together and documents created with older versions of Office won't look any different when they're opened in future versions of Office. The exact features that are disabled in Compatibility Mode depend on which Office application you're using and which type of Compatibility Mode a document is using.

You can find out which Compatibility Mode a document is in. To do so, open a document that's in Compatibility Mode and click File > Info > Check for Issues > Check Compatibility. To get a document out of Compatibility Mode, open it in the appropriate Office application and click File > Info > Convert. This will convert the older document to a modern type of Office document.

Don't do this if you (or someone else) need to work with the document using an older version of Office, like Office 2010.

NACO's 2015 Directory of County Officials is a valuable resource that not only gives you names, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers and e-mail addresses of every county official in the state, but includes a listing of county board meeting days, NACO districts, county seats, NACO officers and directors, affiliate officers and NACO staff.

As of  January 2016, NACO will no longer print the hard copy of the directory and send one to each county.  The directory has been made a part of the NACO website through a clickable and searchable icon and will be updated as corrections are submitted. The directory on the website is downloadable for a printed copy and it can also be transferred electronically to office computers and devices with memory storage such as smartphones and ipads.

For a copy of the latest 2015 directory, click here for the order form.

Saving Lives through Local Road Safety Planning

June 30, 2016, 1:00 pm - 2:15 pm CDT

Contact: Jenna Moran (202) 942-4224
Join us on this interactive webinar to learn about Local Road Safety Plans (LRSPs), and how your county can benefit from the development and implementation of one. Federal, state, and local transportation experts will discuss the recognized positive impacts LRSPs have on local road safety through collaboration with safety stakeholders, building awareness and correlation with the State Strategic Highway Safety Plans (SHSP). LRSPs are designed to build on the foundation established by the SHSP. They can also provide the basis for systemic implementation of safety measures across the entire jurisdiction. This presentation will provide an overview of LRSP with a focus on (1) the "why" of developing Local Road Safety Plans; (2) the benefits realized and (3) different approaches to the development and implementation of the plans.
