How Well Do you Know your Safety Glass?

Safety glass is designed to resist breaking and to minimize the risk of injury when it does break.

Safety glass comes in two forms:
  1. tempered
  2. laminated
Tempered Glass is four times stronger than annealed glass of the same thickness. Tempered glass is heated in an tempering furnace to a precise softening point and then quickly air-cooled. 

The tempering process is what makes the glass safe. If a tempered piece of glass breaks, it breaks in small, relatively harmless, diced-size pieces.

Laminated Glass is two or more glass sheets with one or more interlayers of plastic(PVB) or resin.  When laminated glass breaks, the interlayer(s) holds the glass fragments in place, and prevents the glass from breaking into sharp pieces. Laminated glass offers superior safety and other benefits including security and sound transmission control. It also prevents pass-through of objects and increase protection against fall-out and penetration of the opening.

Tempered or laminated glass as well as building code regulations should be considered for all safety applications including but not limited to:

  • Glass doors & sidelites 
  • Glass enclosures
  • Partitions
  • Glass Shelves
  • Table tops
  • All frameless glass installations
  • Glass surrounds for bathtubs, showers, hot tubs, saunas
  • Glass railings and balustrades
