Heroes Among Us:
Miguel Torres

In honor of Memorial Day, we recognize members of our own staff who have served in the military. Miguel Torres works as a Physician Assistant at EPN Urgent Care.  Miguel joined the Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division right out of high school, and had the opportunity to go through combat lifesavers training.  It was this training that first peaked his interest in medicine.  Miguel served overseas in several peace keeping missions in Middle Eastern countries including Egypt, Israel and Lebanon.  He says that his experience in the Army exposed him to a range of different people and cultures, and credits these experiences with shaping him as an individual.  Thank you for your service, Miguel.

Which Shades Protect Your Eyes?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can damage your eyes, not just your skin. Use these tips from The Mayo Clinic to select the correct shades:

  • Choose sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays. Skip sunglasses that are labeled "cosmetic" and those that don't offer details on the amount of UV protection.
  • Opt for larger lenses rather than smaller lenses. Better yet, choose wraparound sunglasses.
  • Be aware that while polarized lenses reduce glare, they don't offer any UV protection unless they're specifically treated with UV coating.
May is National
Bike Safety Month

Bike Safety May is National Bike Safety Month, and the American Automobile Association is encouraging bicyclists and motorists to make safety a top priority.  "Aside from wearing a helmet, one of the most important bike safety tips AAA highly recommends is to cross at designated intersections, complemented by following traffic signal laws," said John Pecchio, traffic safety consultant for the AAA Club Group. "Bicycle riders greatly increase their chance of being injured or killed if they dart in front of vehicles or do not obey all traffic signs and signals."

Five Smart Steps To
Cut Down On Sugar

Sugar FreeThe bad news about sugar just keeps on coming. A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study linked taking in too much of the sweet stuff to a higher risk of dying of heart disease. In addition, a new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that the participants who ate the most sugar had a 10 percent higher risk of dying from any cause, compared to the average person. It's enough to make you want to quit sugar altogether, and an increasing number of people are doing just that.
