Whether it's picking out gifts, standing in line or dealing with family, the holidays can present many unavoidable stressors. For some of us, just hearing the word "holiday" can create anxiety. We have little time to get a lot done, and it seems as if the year has just flown by. The holidays can be a time for joy and celebration, but it can also be a time when people experience high levels of sadness, anxiety, stress and exhaustion. With that in mind, here are five strategies to help you reduce your stress level during the holidays.

Early Flu Season Elevates Risk of Catching Flu This Year
|
Health officials recently said suspected flu cases have jumped in five southern states, and the primary strain circulating is one that tends to make people sicker, especially the elderly. "It looks like it's shaping up to be a bad flu season, but only time will tell," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The good news is the nation seems to be fairly well prepared, Frieden said. More than a third of Americans have been vaccinated, and the vaccine is well matched to the strains of flu seen so far, CDC officials said.

Child Sleep Problems May Indicate Deeper Health Issues

Children who snore or struggle with sleep apnea often have other problems linked to poor sleeping, such as frequently waking up at night. However, treatment for these conditions often focuses on the behavioral aspect or the respiratory aspect, rarely both, according to findings from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University. The study, published in the Behavioral Sleep Medicine journal, is based on results of a survey of the parents of more than 11,000 children between the ages of 1.5 and 8. "Our findings should raise awareness among parents and physicians that if a child is sleeping poorly, they should delve deeper to see if there is an unrecognized respiratory-related sleep problem," said one of the study authors Karen Bonuck, Ph.D
