Hutton Manor School Newsletter

Friday 10th  February 2017
Dear Parents,

It has been quite an eventful week at Hutton Manor and with Mrs Hobbs out on Inspection duties this means 'the team' have been called upon once again to deliver a newsletter worthy of Mrs Hobbs' weekly news.  And so starting with an event which took place last Friday, here we go....
Year 6 ISA Football Tournament, Stoke College, Suffolk - Mr Allen reporting
On Friday last week our Year 6 boys competed in the ISA Football Tournament at Stoke College in Ipswich. Mr Allen reports as follows:

A selected Year 6 Boys' team participated in the ISA Eastern Region Five a Side Football Competition at Stoke College in Suffolk on Friday 3 February.

We faced five group games vs Finborough, CIS, Sacred Heart, Alleyn Court and St Margaret's Schools, of which we won three, drew one and lost one. The team then progressed into the quarter finals vs Thorpe Hall which we won 1-0. In the semi final we were victorious again vs St Margaret's 2-0.

This set up a tense but really exciting final vs Littlegarth School. We came through again winning 1-0 with memorable celebrations taking place at the trophy presentation!

The School has never won this event and we are tremendously proud of their achievement particularly as the team will now represent the Eastern Region in the National competition in March. Well done boys!

The Team:
Joshua Buller, Freddie Abbott, Luke Nash, Teddy Francis, Sebi Concannon and Liam McNeilly
A WOW moment for Attendance
Whilst dealing with registers and attendance in the office last Friday it was noted that for three consecutive weeks, Class 1W/R had 100% attendance. Mrs Hobbs was really pleased and suggested that it goes into the newsletter. That is quite an achievement 1W/R so well done!
Journeys Back in Time in Class Assemblies....
....... with Year 4 and the Invaders of Britain
On Monday Year 4 told us all about the invaders of Britain. There were so many facts and historic figures mentioned that we all came out of assembly feeling very well informed.

To summarise, it started by the Romans leaving and the Britons being attacked by the Picts and Scots so King Vortigern hired the Saxon brothers Hengist and Horsa to defend his land but they took a liking to it! The Angles, Saxons and Jutes had arrived (Anglo-Saxons).

Then the Vikings were invading Lindisfarne in Northumbria and the Venerable Bede shed light on the so called Dark Ages by writing the first chronicle of British history. The Vikings brought their pagan Gods to England (Odin, Thor, Loki, Sif, Freya) and then the Anglo-Saxon and Viking Kings were mentioned until William the Conqueror arrived and the Normans took over.
Phew!

........ with Year 3 and the Romans
On Wednesday Year 3 taught us all about the Romans, and how they influenced life in Britain today. The question being asked was " What did the Romans do for us?". Year 3 confidently and clearly informed us of the major contributions made.
Two wonderful assemblies thank you Year 4 and Year 3.
Big Schools' Birdwatch for the RSPB - Mrs Wesson Reporting
Bright and early on Wednesday morning, some of us arrived in school full of enthusiasm to take part in our annual birdwatch for the RSPB. A few children were first timers and soon settled down with their binoculars alongside the more seasoned birders. After an initial look over the rather gloomy view of the grounds without any signs of life, sightings came thick and fast. In total, fourteen different species were spotted including some colourful and less common varieties: jays, long-tailed tits and a green woodpecker. A huge thank you to those that came along: Adam, Scarlet, Dolly, Mar, Isabella, Caitlin, Daniel and Freddie. And I must not forget Mr Abbott whose expertise and help will be sorely missed next year.

Reception Visit to Leeds Castle - Mrs Lott reporting
Wednesday was a very exciting day for Reception class when we visited Leeds Castle. At the entrance we were met by Leanne, our tour guide and we were very lucky as our coach was allowed to drive us down to the castle. As we came through the woodland and into the opening the excitement from the children filled the bus as the Castle came into view. We were taken straight to our Sybil the Cygnet workshop where we met Merlin the owl and learnt many interesting facts about owls and living things.
Each of us was given our very own costume to wear before acting out the story of Sybil. We then walked down to the play area where we enjoyed a picnic lunch and plenty of time to play. Our afternoon was just as exciting with feeding the swans (especially the black ones), a guided tour of the castle with plenty of funny facts and finally we boarded the train back to meet our coach. On the way we enjoyed some treats and listened to a few zzzzs! A brilliant day spent in a wonderful setting with a fantastic class!

Kindergarten's Soup Kitchen! - Mrs Pursue reporting
In Kindergarten we have been learning about healthy food and keeping warm. This week we made a healthy vegetable soup.  The children investigated the touch and smell of vegetables and chopped up some potatoes, carrots, pepper and celery to go into the soup.  We also added tinned tomatoes, garlic and chicken stock.  The soup was blended and heated up the next day to take out on our Outdoor Learning lesson.  It was a really cold day on Thursday and many of the children enjoyed drinking their warm soup by the nature trail whilst listening to the story Pumpkin Soup.  As some of the children enjoyed the soup so much we are sending the recipe home for you to try.

Soccer Training Giveaway
Last week we were lucky enough to be given two vouchers for two days complimentary football training during half term. School Council decided it would be fair if everyone interested in going was put into a raffle to be drawn on Monday at lunch time. We had a huge interest, but the lucky winners were Harriet and Ellie B. Have a fantastic time girls!
PGL - 2 to 5 May 2017
We have just ONE space left for PGL this year. If there is anyone in Years 3-5 who wishes to add their name to the final list of children attending please call or pop into the School Office no later than Tuesday 21 February.
