Emergency Resp0nder Training September 14-15-16

The Emergency Response Committee is pleased to announce a 24 Hour Emergency Responder Training Program that will be held September 14-15-16, 2015 and an Emergency Responder Refresher Training Program September 16, 2014 at the New York State Fire Academy in Montour Falls, NY.

The refresher training is an OSHA requirement for all responders who have taken the original 24 hour (3 day) course. The OSHA standard requires a refresher training every three years.

Three-day Course Overview: The course will be based on the materials found in the Propane emergencies Text, 3rd Edition. It will cover the physical characteristics of propane, the containers propane is stored in and the way propane is transported. The information will then be translated to hands-on and real life ER training.

Finally, there will a review of ER responses and incidents and a look into the future of Propane ER. This training can be applied to requirements for ER training in OSHA and NFPA standards.

Look for an official notice for this offering in the coming weeks.

Why we are using propane-powered buses

On Board Online * April 27, 2015

By Paul Nienstadt

When it comes to transportation costs, school districts throughout the state are constantly searching for ways to improve efficiency.

At Washingtonville Central School District, we found that changing our bus fuel has improved finances and positioned us as a leader in environmental initiatives and a model for the community.

We operate an 89-bus fleet to transport more than 5,000 students to 28 Orange County area schools - public, private and parochial. Currently, 18 buses are fueled by propane autogas, also called liquified petroleum gas or simply autogas. We recently ordered nine more Blue Bird Propane Vision Type C buses, which would make 30 percent of our fleet powered by an alternative fuel.

When making our initial purchase of eight buses, each bus cost about 9 percent more than the comparable diesel model. But we were able to recoup that incremental cost within one year, and our savings continue.
