The Moonshot Moment Eblast
Issue: # 7September 3, 2013

"Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. It is a tool for daily life in modern society. It is a bulwark against poverty, and a building block of development. Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realize his or her full potential."

A Case for Literacy

The national unemployment rate for non-high school graduates is 13% compared with only 4% for college graduates

85% of all juveniles who interface with the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate

More than 70% of inmates in America's prisons cannot read above a fourth-grade level

Simple early learning literacy screenings in kindergarten show that 1 in 4 children are at-risk for failure unless something is done to intervene

Research-based literacy programs implemented for at-risk children have proven successful and enduring, catching those 'at risk' up to their peers
