FCCPTA CALL TO ACTION!

Maintaining Quality Schools in Fairfax County

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is often regarded as one of the best school districts in the country, but quality comes at a cost.  FCPS has struggled with their budget for many years.  Dr. Karen Garza, School Superintendent, recently presented a "proposed budget" that is balanced by reductions of $96.5 million and requesting an increase of $98.1 million transfer for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.  For budget details, please refer to the FCCPTA paper, Maintaining Quality Schools In Fairfax County

Here is where we -- FCCPTA, teachers, students -- need your help:
  • Contact your Fairfax County Board of Supervisor and ask that the Board give the schools the 5.7% increase in the transfer requested.
  • Schedule to Speak in front of the Board of Supervisors or School Board
  • Contact your Senator and Delegate at the Virginia General Assembly and ask for more funding of K-12 education.  Specifically, ask for Fairfax County to be held "harmless" on the adjustment of the LCI (Local Composite Index).

  • Attend the Virginia PTA's PTA Day on Monday, January 27 to advocate for public education at the Virginia General Assembly.

Citizen's Guide to Understanding the FCPS Budget

Under the leadership of Dr. Karen Garza, Superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools, the Citizen's Guide to Understanding the Budget was
"created as a tool for our community to make the
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) annual budget more transparent.  Developing the budget is very important because it reflects the priorities of the FCPS community. As a division, our primary purpose is to support the learning of all students.  [The] guide details FCPS revenues and expenditures, and shows that FCPS is efficient and effective in using public dollars as [FCPS] invest[s] in our children's education. This year, it's especially important to understand the FCPS budget so we can have thoughtful conversations about our priorities. We will face a critical challenge as our revenues have not kept pace with our growth and needs."
Real Food For Kids
Real Foods For Kids Needs Parents To Be Advocates In Their Childrens' Schools

Does your school know about what is happening with Real Food For Kids and the initiative to improve school food? You can be the connection! RFFK is looking for one individual from every school in Fairfax County Public Schools to be a liaison of information. As we send out information via our newsletters or email, you can take back timely information to share with your school or RFFK:
  • Post on your school's PTA/PTSA/PTO site
  • Write a blurb for your school's weekly blast message
  • Put up posters regarding events
  • Request the information to be shared with the school's wellness committee
  • Forward questions from your school to RFFK so we can address individual needs
  • Share ideas about great things your school may be doing that other FCPS school may love to replicate!
Please join our team! Send confirmation and/or questions to rffknews@verizon.net. Then pass on this message to your friends in other schools in your community and throughout the county. Let's get the message out there: real food is important for our kids!
