Summer To-Do List
There are certain things local unit executive boards should be doing before the first meeting of the new school year.
Below this article are a few ideas for events/programming that you may interested in pursuing this year. Read the September 2013 issue of Our Children, available by clicking on the image in the sidebar, for more information.
- Check progress of Annual Financial Audit. Audit Must Be Completed Soon After Beginning Of Fiscal Year AND Before Checks Can Be Issued. UNLESS there are irregularities revealed in the audit, checks may be written prior to approval of the audit by the general membership during the first general membership meeting.
- Finalize budget. Review the Financial Management section of the Local Unit Resource Guide and the Finance Guide that is included on the Back To School memory stick that each local unit should soon receive.
- MAKE Sure Bank Check Signing Documents Are Up-To-Date.
- REVIEW Bylaws Need To Be Revised At Least Every Five Years. Can't find a copy of your bylaws? No problem, email info@vapta.org.
- Make sure that your PTA president's information was submitted to Virginia PTA by June 15. Call (866)482-5437 or email info@vapta.org if you are not sure.
- Use the Virginia PTA 501(c)(3) Determination Letter Request Form to receive a copy of your 501(c)(3) Determination Letter.
- Check the expiration date of your PTA's Retail Sales Tax and Use Exemption. Visit the Virginia Department of Taxation's Retail Sales and Use Tax Exemptions for Nonprofit Organizations webpage for more information.

National PTA School of Excellence Program
The PTA School of Excellence Program is a great way to step-up your PTA's involvement in school improvements or make something meaningful happening between your PTA and school.
The National PTA School of Excellence program helps PTAs strengthen the family-school partnership and make measurable progress together in one of three areas:
- Education
- Health and safety
- Arts and cultural exploration
At a National PTA School of Excellence, families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success, and PTA is a key partner for continuous school improvement.
In the 2013-2014 school year, put your school on the National PTA School of Excellence map!
Enrollment deadline is September 30, 2013!
The September 2013 issue of Our Children, available by clicking on the image in the sidebar, has an article on page 9 about Schools of Excellence.
Contact excellence@pta.org for more information.

Schedule A "Blueprint for Change" Adolescent Sleep Health Presentation
Parents of FCPS students, regardless of grade level, should understand the changing sleep requirements of their children. Towards that end, the Fairfax County School Board entered into a consulting contract with Children's National Medical Center (CNMC) titled Blueprint for Change. CNMC's consulting contract is to assist the School Board with the goal of establishing high school start times at 8:00 AM or later.
Schedule a Blueprint for Change presentation now by contacting Jennifer Williams at jenniferkwms@gmail.com or 571-232-5139.
REMEMBER: First graders have a habit of growing into high school freshmen.

Host A Food Day Or Real Food For Kids Presentation
Join Real Food For Kids (RFFK) as they celebrate Food Day 2013 on Monday, October 28 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at Hollins Meadows Science & Math Focus School, 2310 Nordok Place, Alexandria.
Food Day is a nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, and sustainable food. If you would like to host your own Food Day event visit the Host an Event page of the Food Day 2013 website.
RFFK is committed to working in collaborative ways with schools to ensure that students are offered the very best in fresh, whole foods. There is a lot of highly processed food in our national food supply so getting rid of excess sugars, preservatives and chemicals that don't belong in a healthy diet is a challenge. RFFK encourages kids to help by getting involved in their own schools and finding ways to make positive contributions to health and happiness of our community.
Schedule a RFFK presentation today by contacting JoAnne Hammermaster, President of RFFK, at president@realfoodforkids.org.
Real Food For Kids is a FCCPTA Partner.

Organize A Walk To School Day For Wednesday, October 9
Organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America, Walk to School Day began in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities. Although Walk to School Day is focused more on walking and Bike to School Day is focused more on bicycling, both days welcome and encourage all forms of active transportation to school.
Walk to School Day event registration is free and available to individuals and organizations holding an October event in the United States. Events that register on the Walk to School website will be displayed on an interactive U.S. map on the website, where neighboring communities, media and other organizations can identify who is walking in their area.
Registering a Walk to School Day event provides organizers access to free, downloadable materials including stickers, certificates and customizable fliers. They can also easily create and share a walking or bicycling to school route via the new Map-a-Route tool. Registrants can also receive a weekly e-newsletter for four weeks in September and October with tips and resources for organizing a Walk to School Day event.
