Proper Riding Attire |
A note to ALL RIDERS! Please be aware and respectful of proper riding attire. We ask that you wear fitted tops with sleeve--no tank tops--and please tuck in your shirts. Obviously, as the weather is changing layering is important, but please be sure that your layers are fitted and not baggy. It's important that we can still see your position as you are riding!
Please refrain from wearing excessive jewelry! Hanging earrings are dangerous and you should only ever wear studs when you are riding. Hair should be NEATLY pulled back in a low ponytail. If you would like a lesson in how to properly tie your hair in a hairnet, please talk to McKenzie!
AND NO FLIP FLOPS! EVER!

Holiday Hours |
Mill Creek is closed on Christmas and New Year's Day. Boarders should check in the office for barn hours on those days.

Clipping & Blankets |
Clipping
Many owners now have their own clippers and are clipping their horses themselves. This is great! Make sure you have your own clipper oil! You should be sure to sharpen your clippers after 2-3 uses. Cory recommends having two sets of blades so that you have one available while the others are being sharpened. Never use the small clippers on the legs; they clip too close to the skin. The small clippers should be used for the face and ears only.
Blankets All boarders should have only the blanket their horse is currently using on their stall door: no others! At this time of year, you should be using your heavy winter blanket and all others should be cleaned and put away. If you have multiple blankets out, it is difficult for the staff to know which one to put on your horse and it makes the barn aisles look cluttered. Thank you. |

Greetings!

I am writing to let you know that on January 2nd, Mette and I will be trekking to Palm Beach Florida for 2 months. Finn, Regent, and Socrates will be making the journey along with Anna Solbreke's horses Rico, Stravinsky, and Acilla. Palm Beach is an epicenter for all things equestrian.
Many of the top riders from the East Coast and Europe spend the winter season in Florida because of the continuous show schedule. Every weekend Mette will have the opportunity to ride in the CDI classes, the top international level competition with Finn. She will have access to 8 of these high level competitions within the 2 months, whereas if she stayed home is California would only have access to 5 within 5 months! The horses, especially Finn, will be exposed to the best of the best of competition, and Mette is very excited to be able to work and ride in this type of environment. For more information, and to keep up with her competition results, please visit her website at http://www.metterosencrantz.com.
Also, as we head into the end of the year, I wanted to wish you and your families all the best for the holidays and the New Year and to thank you for making 2012 another successful year for Mill Creek.

Important Note for Boarders with Full Care Horses
New Feed Policy begins January 1
Starting in January, there will be no individual feed stored at Mill Creek. In an effort to keep the feed room organized and as clean as possible, Mill Creek will be supplying grain. All horses in FULL CARE will be fed Triple Crown (a mix) with your SmartPak. We are also trying to get CONTROL OF THE RODENT PROBLEM! Yuck! In addition to carrying a number of diseases, rats will eat your grain, tack, and even go so far as to chew on your horses chestnuts and hooves when they are laying down!) You will be responsible for ordering SmartPaks for your horse. Again, there will be NO INDIVIDUAL GRAIN STORAGE for horses in Full Care. For more information stop in the office.

A Note About Ulcers in Horses
For your education, an update from the U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.
Ulcers are a common medical condition in horses--and your instructors!
One third of adult horses that live in confined stalls may have afflicted with a mild case of ulcers. In humans, eating stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid. In horses hydrochloric acid is produced constantly, If they don't eat, the acid accumulates in the stomach and can start to irritate the stomach, especially in the non-glandular portion.
Signs of Ulcers-Diagnosing:
Is your horse showing any of the following signs?
- poor appetite
- weight loss
- teeth grinding
- angry @ riders leg
- poor body and fur condition
- mild colic
- poor performance
- lying down more than usual
IN SEVERE CASES, ULCERS CAN BE LIFE THREATENING. Make sure you are of aware of your horses normal behaviors.
Treatment:
Medication and changes in care and feed are important guidelines to treating ulcers.
- decrease acid production
- buffer the acid that is produced
- protect the lining of the stomach
Feed changes:
- A feed requiring a longer time to chew-which increases saliva- helps to neutralize the stomach acid.
- ALFALFA, high in CALCIUM, has been found to decrease risk of ulcers.
Consult with your vet to follow the proper guidelines for your horse.
