Read about Rev. Landa Simmons, outreach opportunities and so much more!
|
|
This first six years at Slash have been wonderful for me and my family. I want to thank you all for the opportunity to take some time away in July, August, and September and recharge my spiritual batteries. I will also do some studies and come back with new ideas that I will share with our Leadership Community about a key issue we are facing here at Slash right now.
That issue is the need to raise up new leaders. I believe we need to do even more than we are doing right now to raise up, train, and empower new leaders for all our ministries. Slash is known for its mission and outreach in our community and after some recent study, I believe that the mission mindedness of our members can be a pathway to encouraging new leaders.
I plan to read, dissect and interpret "Doing the Math of Mission" and mine it for leadership ideas. I actually have a long reading list and some trips with the family planned for the summer. Additionally I plan to take an online class: "Leadership: Ten Rules for Impact and Meaning. There will be much time for me to reflect on our ministry together and spend time in prayer. I look forward to being with you again in October.
Guest Preacher, Rev. Landa Simmons

| | | Our guest preacher, Rev. Landa Simmons and her husband Cris. | |
It is my pleasure to introduce Rev. Landa Simmons from Williamsburg, VA. She will be our guest preacher at Slash during my sabbatical. Landa is an old friend who served in ministry with me in Georgia. A wonderful preacher and teacher that I have known for over 15 years. She is currently leading a Sunday School Class at Olive Branch Christian Church on Sundays. Landa is an ordained Disciples minister who studied at Vanderbilt and Candler School of Theology.
Some of you already know Landa. You had the opportunity to meet her when Dr. Anil Henry, our Missionary Partner, came to visit us at Slash. Landa volunteers as the Executive Director of the Rambo Committee which steers and assists the ministry of Dr. Henry at the Christian Hospital in Mungeli India.
|
| | | Mobile Clinic of the Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India. | |
Speaking of the Christian Hospital, I want to let you know that through Landa's work on the Rambo Committee with US Aid the hospital now has a new mobile clinic.
We at Slash were some of the first to help raise money for Baby Boxes to encourage mothers to get prenatal care in the rural areas around Mungeli. The money we raised on Mother's Day this year is already on the way to help the hospital. Every mother who visits the clinicf for care will get a baby box to take home when their child is born. And now with the mobile clinic even more mothers will get the care they need.
I am glad you will all have the opportunity to get to know Landa during my Sabbatical. God will bless Landa and all of you while I am gone.
Pastoral Care and Prayer Concerns
In my absence the Elders will be responding to every family in the congregation with prayers, support, and hospital visits. Remember to stay in contact with each other by emailing eknee@slashcc.org. This email address will be monitored and messages of care and concern passed along to the congregation.
I am so looking forward to returning in October to be with you all again. Until then God's peace be with you all.

Rev. Landa Simmons' sermon series begins July 10th
During Michael's sabbatical, I know I will not fill his shoes, in the pulpit or pastorally.
However, " while the cat's away, the mice can play," and I do hope that we can have some fun together. Beginning on July 10, I will begin a sermon series "The Hills Are Alive" based on the texts from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) and the music from The Sound Of Music.
Dust off your DVD, and break out the popcorn. Have a family, youth group or Sunday school class party, and relive the great music from the musical--songs like "My Favorite Things", "Do-Re-Mi", and "I am Sixteen Going on Seventeen". Try to guess which songs will go with what texts and come to church prepared to hum along.

Looking to the Future
By Cathy Tillman, Moderator
Congregational Meeting
Immediately following worship on July 31st we will have a Congregational Meeting to consider the filling of the position of Youth Director, discussion on the new Counting Team process for Sunday collections and new Trustee replacement. We hope you make plans to be there.
Pavilion
Progress has been slow on our new pavilion and storage facility. As with any project such as this, much "behind the scenes work" had to be completed such as obtaining permits and other required signatures. Soon you should be seeing the changes begin so keep your eyes open and continue to help in supporting this new addition to our grounds.
Backup for Financial Secretary We continue to move forward in making changes to the process of handling our Sunday collections. The Stewardship and Finance Committee has been and is still working through the details to keep our process as confidential and secure as possible. Over the next two months, you will continue to be involved in those details as they develop. Thank you to everyone for understanding the need to change our current process.
Nominating Committee It is that time of year again when our nominating committee will begin to meet to discuss Slash's leadership for 2017. That seems like a long way away, but believe me - it is just around the corner. If you are contacted by a member of our nominating committee, we hope that you will be willing to be a part of our leadership in continuing the growth of Slash Christian Church in serving our Lord!

Outreach Opportunities
ACES June Food Drive
Thank you to every single person who donated food and other hygiene items to support Ashland Christian Emergency Services. The summer brings many new challenges for this volunteer organization to help serve those in need in the Ashland area. With your support, local families are better able to keep their families healthy and fed.
Ashland Open Door
You also supported our drive for Ashland Open Door - helping to give families the opportunity to get their feet on the ground and in safer living quarters. Our drive continues through July 3rd so as of this time, the final numbers are not quite available. As of the third week in June, our pyramid was rising with additional food for ACES and monetary donations to support families being vacated from Ashland hotels. Life is not always easy and through your kindness, many families have a better chance to stay safe. As the next several weeks continue, we will provide to you the final updates on these two Outreach projects. THANK YOU SO MUCH !
Again this year the Disciple Women will be promoting the YMCA's fill a backpack program.
Watch for more information in late July in the Slash Flash and the bulletin!

News from Xuyen:
Xuyen Dangers , Social Work Consultant/Missionary working through Global Ministries and Church World Service in Laos for many years was missionary partner with Slash. Xuyen is now retired and living in Arkansas with her husband. She sends greetings of love and blessings to the people of Slash Church who she grew to know and love during her 12 years with us as missionary partner. Xuyen, originally from Vietnam was commissioned to Laos more than 20 years ago.
With the energy, enthusiasm and dedication to her work, the traveling to different countries, teaching, helping, healing, ministering, and then moving to a new country and culture, retirement didn't come easy. And the land they owned in Arkansas didn't "perk" so they couldn't build their dream house, so they bought one.
Bits and pieces from email from Xuyen in her words...
"Slowly, maybe I am happier here in this little town of Ozark, after a year and half of transition full of challenges especially when I was ill off and on for two months last August-September. Thank God I am now very well and full of energy. SO HERE ARE WHAT I AM DOING NOW. Exercise a few times a week (Silver Sneakers) and Yoga. I just joined a group of older ladies and go every Tuesday to learn how to quilt,(I love this traditional heritage of American Art), and I also show the group some weaving of Laos. They are so kind and talented and tell me many stories and teach me gardening. I also go to Adult Education Center of Arkansas Tech University to study English Writing and more computer and really enjoy it. We visit "The Woodland" our property, I call it Shangrizaka or Shngrila or Ozark Arkansas, every week to rest, play in the creek or just observe all the flowers, trees and animals. I am doing a whole lot of gardening now, we bring logs, wood chips, soil and rocks from the creek to build our gardens and walkway in our backyard. I feel very happy when I do gardening, I realize how much I missed this hobby. I can't wait to harvest the first broccoli or lettuce or something-----I am blessed I am able to live here the whole winter and the beginning of spring, it bring me back to life just like those daffodils and Irish. I have reconnected with my relatives in California, at least 35 of them, and some friends who are retired social workers from Vietnam. We have had visits from our daughter and grandson from Boston as well as friends from different parts of the US. All those friends and family visitors have warmed up our new house and now it become like a home again. Thank God."

It is most appreciated and a true blessing. Love, April Pierce
Thank you. Sometimes we just don't say it often enough.I want to make sure you know how much I - and all the ministries of the general Church - appreciate your support of Disciples Mission Fund. Your congregation is one of the top 250 in the denomination for DMF giving January to May, 2016.
Because of you Disciples Church Extension Fund was able to respond with disaster services within 24 hours of devastating fire in Lake Jackson, TX. Because of you, restorative work is being done in the Middle East. Because of you, hope -filled Hispanic congregations are supported in leader development, Disciple Volunteering can dig in to long-term rebuilding in SC and Disciple Home Missions can offer Worship & Wonder training so we can teach the next generation of Disciples. Thank you for bringing hope and wholeness through your exceptional support.
Because of you, I am thankful.
