2016 Sermon Series

On Easter Sunday we will answer Jesus' question which he asked Mary at the tomb the day after he died. He asked her, "Who are you looking for?". We will talk about the promise of the Resurrection and Jesus calling her by name. Mary was not the only one Jesus saw that day. He appeared to the other women, then to Peter, then to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, and then to ten more disciples. That was just the first day. A week later He appeared again to the disciples, with Thomas this time. He appeared to seven of the disciples at the Sea of Galilee one morning. He appeared to many others, even to more than 500 at one time. Over the course of 40 days Jesus continued to teach and to touch. Then the time came for Him to ascended into heaven. However, he left instructions for His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the gift of the Holy Spirit was given.

Our sermon series after Easter will explore what it means to be "In the Spirit". We have all read the story of Pentecost in Acts 2 and how the Holy Spirit came that day. We know a lot about the Spirit but how do we know when we are really "In the Spirit"? I am interested in exploring and understanding what Pentecost meant to the early believers, and what Pentecost means for us today?

There are many good answers to these question and we will explore them all in April and May but let me say simply that Pentecost matters to you if you are a Christian because it was the sign of great things to come. Join me for worship "In the Spirit" at Slash Christian Church.

Board Meeting
Splinters from the Board
Looking to the Future
By Cathy Tillman, Moderator

As most are aware, the Kersey storage building has become a safety issue for our property. The facility has served us well over the years but needs major repairs or replacement. Understanding the need for storage, the Property Committee was tasked with the responsibility of determining the best solution. The members of the committee studied alternatives over the past several months and have presented their recommendation to the Board which includes a storage building and pavilion to be located behind the Fellowship Hall.  Their proposal considers our immediate needs but also suggests that we consider adding an outdoor pavilion to the project. The Property Committee believes that the addition of this new facility would give Slash more opportunities for ministry now and in the future.

At the March Board Meeting, the Board approved the recommendation. Before bringing it to the congregation, two informational Town Hall meetings have been scheduled - the first being Sunday April 10th at 1:30 PM and the second, Tuesday, April 12th at 6:30 PM.  These informational meetings will allow all members to see the suggested area, understand the possibilities for its use now and in the future, discuss funding, and ask any questions.

The Committee and the Board hope that you will be available to attend one of these sessions before the Congregational Meeting on April 17th, following One Worship at 11 AM , to consider and vote on this option.  We will also discuss the election of an Assistant Treasurer to fill a vacancy. We are excited about these plans and the new opportunities afforded to us with these changes.

More Splinters from the Board

Financial Secretary Position
The Financial Secretary position has been held by Ted Jones for many years.  The Nominating Committee each year has tried to fill that position to relieve Ted of some of the responsibilities, but to no avail. The position in its current status requires a significant amount of time to cover all aspects. A process has begun to change the look and feel of that position, taking into full account the confidentiality and trust needed to handle those responsibilities. Over the next few months, you will be hearing more about these required changes and ask for your consideration and support.  Ted has filled this position for many years and Slash owes him a great deal of gratitude. Thank you Ted!

Outreach Opportunities

Slash Christian Church Rises to the Challenge!

On Sunday, February 28th, a challenge was given to the congregation of Slash to provide kitchen items, clothing, food, water, plastic containers and financial donations to the Red Cross to help our neighbors in Tappahannock whose lives were turned upside down. Well, guess what! Slash met that challenge head-on. On Wednesday, March 9th, 4 vehicles filled to capacity left Slash headed for Smyrna Christian Church to deliver those items. You met the challenge in full force and gave unconditionally from the heart. Monetary donations totaling $992.00 also headed to the Red Cross to help those victims. How could we ask for anything more?  THANK YOU and may God continue to bless you!

And in like fashion, you gave $1018.84 to the Week of Compassion Offering.  Thank you for helping to enrich the lives of so many less fortunate.  And thank you in advance for your contributions to the Special Easter Offering as well. The money you give to these special offerings allows us to continue to reach out further into our communities to share the Word.

Easter Special Offering:
Your gift to the Easter Offering helps bring life, love and learning through the general ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Ministries that receive funding from the Easter Offering include: the Center for Faith and Giving, Central Pastoral office for Hispanic Ministries, Communication Ministries, Council on Christian Unity, Disciples Church Extension Fund / Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation, Disciples of Chris Historical Society, Disciples Home missions, Disciples Women, Division of Overseas Ministries/Global Ministries, Higher Education and Leadership Ministries, National Benevolent Association, National Convocation, North American Pacific/Asian Disciples, and Treasury Services.

Relay for Life Walk - Saturday June 18th 4 pm to 10 pm
relay for life
The Outreach Committee is putting together a team once again for Slash Christian Church to help battle cancer.  Probably every one of you is related to someone or knows someone who has been affected by cancer.  Research is making progress and hopefully in the years to come there will be a cure (or prevention) for many forms of cancer.   This year's Western Hanover Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, June 18th at Kings Dominion Camp Wilderness Campground in Doswell.  Click here for the link to Slash Christian Church team

We hope that you will join our team - donate to a team member - or purchase a luminaria to honor or remember a loved one who has been touched by cancer.  With our help, there is hope!  With our help, cancer victims live longer lives!  With our help, victims and their families know they are not alone!   We hope that you will join us in our effort to push back the devastating effects that cancer makes on the lives of our friends and our loved ones!  Sign up or support our team!  We can and will make a difference!
