Michael's Memo
Join us for a Special Mother's Day Celebration
at Slash Christian Church

Our Global Missions Partner, Dr. Anil Henry

Missionary

from the Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India will be our special guest speaker in worship on May 10th at both worship services.  Dr. Henry will be introducing us to a challenge that the hospital is facing. He will share the story of the hospital and invite you to help babies and their families through the Baby Box program.  Here in the United States 6 of every 1000 babies will die before their first birthday. At the Christian Hospital, the rate is higher and prenatal care would help.  The problem is that the hospital needs a way to encourage parents to see the doctor. The Baby Box is meant to encourage those prenatal visits.

What's in the box?  Our baby boxes will contain many "luxury" items that the average rural family cannot afford, like diapers, blankets, sleepers, baby bath and shampoo.  The box will be made of sturdy rubberized plastic so that it will survive the monsoons and also can be reused.  To foster community participation, the blankets and sheets will be sewn by the students in the community college the hospital operates as their first project.

How much will a box cost?   Christian Hospital estimates that the cost of each box will be somewhere around $25.  This cost includes not only the cost of the box and its contents, but also the indirect costs involved with tracking the moms and the babies.

How will they reach the moms?  The senior nursing staff, doctors, and nursing students have made visits to local villages to provide health education and training.  Future plans will include more formalized visits and eventually a mobile examination bus that will enable the hospital staff to conduct prenatal exams and lab tests in the villages.  Hospital outreach is now limited to the distance the staff can travel on their school buses.  Once the hospital has its own mobile clinic bus, they will be able to travel further and reach more moms. Taking the clinic to the moms will give them more opportunities to complete four prenatal visits and be entitled to a baby box.

Would you like to purchase a Baby Box? Our focus in worship in April and May is on being a Mission First congregation. Our Membership Committee is taking the lead on this.  They will purchase 4 Baby Boxes in honor of the women of Slash Church on Mother's Day.  You can take part in this by designating a gift in honor or memory of your mother this Mother's Day!

Slash Book Study on "Whole"
church read

How does your faith shape your life? That is one of the key questions

we will talking about in worship this month and one we want to explore in our book study. You can tell from the title that the book we are reading has a lot to do with the idea of bringing wholeness to our lives and our world.

We will meet every Sunday in May except for Mother's Day when we will hear Dr. Anil Henry our Global Mission Partner during the Sunday School hour.

 Pentecost Special Offering -

"New churches are growing in the light."  The church is shining light in dark places. Since 2001, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has started 850 new Disciples churches, spreading the gospel to more than 60,000 individuals, who may not have had a relationship with Christ. Each week 28 languages are spoken in Disciples churches.

2015 Summer Schedule

We are blessed at Slash Church with more people every Sunday in worship than we can fit into our sanctuary comfortably at one service.  God led us to beginning a second service several years ago and our worship attendance has increased.

However, the Summer is a busy time for families in our community of faith. We have many youth and several adults who will be gone this summer for church camp at Craig Springs. Some of them for more than one week. Family vacations are scheduled and there are some among us who are gone to the river in the Summer time on weekends. Because of all these things we have a few less people in worship on Sundays in July and August and can actually all fit in the sanctuary at one time. What a blessing it is to share worship together in the summer at a special time.

Summer Sunday school attendance has been unpredictable here at Slash and in many churches in past summers.  We do not want to ask a volunteer to plan a lesson and then have no one in attendance, so we go to this special schedule in the summer where we have ONE Worship and offer Children Worship & Wonder during the service for kids 4 years old through 4th graders. The Fellowship Adult Sunday School Class will continue to meet in the Loving Building in the summer at 9 am and they invite all members of the church to join them.

Disciples Women News

As of this writing Disciples Women have collected $300 in the special offering for the Church World Blanket+ Fund and will collect again on April 26.  Thank you for reaching out and providing "coverage" to others through this united program with Church World Services.

Invitation to Central Virginia Masterworks Chorale Concerts

Mark Highfield is singing this spring with the Central Virginia Masterworks Chorale and invites everyone to the Chorale's spring concert, featuring the Durufl Requiem, Four Motets on Gregorian themes, and Shenandoah, an American folk song arranged by the late James Erb. Artistic Director David Sinden will conduct the Chorale, and concert organist Daniel Stipe will accompany as well as perform. The Chorale is very fortunate to include Mr. Stipe in this season's concerts, and his highly-anticipated organ solo is a feature not to be missed!
Mark looks forward to seeing you there.

Are you ready to RISE and take control of your prayer life?

Are you "Standin' in the Need of Prayer"?

Well then, "Take Time to Be Holy" at the "Sweet Hour of Prayer",

a Prayer Vigil, to be held in the sanctuary

at Slash on Friday, May 8th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

A prayer vigil is when a church family comes to the sanctuary to prayer continuously for twelve hours. You may sign up for half hour or hour blocks on the sheet that is in the sanctuary. On May 8th you come to the sanctuary at the half hour or hour block you signed up for and pray alone or with another person. Prayer resources will be available. Please wait until the next participant arrives before departing the building quietly so that prayer is continuous for the twelve hours. Thanks for participating.
