Michael's Memo
World Communion Sunday
October 5, 2014

On communion tables all over the world and on banners in houses of worship you will find inscribed in many languages the simple phrase "In remembrance of me." It is a verse from the Bible, and it is probably the one verse that is in plain view of millions of Christians every time they come to worship the Lord.

Those words were first used in reference to the Lord's Supper by Jesus himself. The apostle Paul recorded them in 1 Corinthians 11. He quoted Jesus as saying of the broken bread and the cup of the covenant, "Do this in remembrance of me."

Those words remind us of two basic facts: that Jesus wants us to remember him and that we sometimes forget Jesus. The Lord's Supper makes it clear to us that Jesus wanted his followers to remember that His ministry on earth was completed on a cross, where he suffered and died for the sins of the world. He wants us to remember the cross as the ultimate demonstration of his love for undeserving, self-centered sinners. We have been talking about this love in our worship and the key verse John 3:16.
For God so loved the world
that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who
believes in him
may not perish
but may have eternal life.

As Disciples of Christ, we never want to forget the love of God and how God's son Jesus came to share that love with us.  Therefore we remember Jesus at communion during every worship service, but it is only once a year during World Communion Sunday that every Christian comes together with us around Tables of the Lord all around the world.  Join us in worship this week as we celebrate and remember how much God loves you and how God will never give up on you.

2014 Bible Study

Imagine the holy land, over 2,000 years ago-a time shrouded in darkness and uncertainty. A young woman named Mary and her husband, Joseph, travel many miles to the village of Bethlehem. To passersby, they would seem all but ordinary. Now imagine the sheer, almost unfathomable magnitude of the secret task carried by this young couple. This is the journey of the people whom God selected for a most sacred purpose--to bring the Son of God, our Messiah, into the world.

Plans are being made now for a special Bible Study here at Slash. This 6 week study may be offered on week nights, week days, on Sunday mornings or all three. If you are interested in hosting or leading a small group study on The Journey contact Rev. Michael or Barbara Jellison, Education Chair today.

In The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem, Adam Hamilton shines fresh light on this vital story, integrating historical and archaeological information, and interweaving personal reflection to illuminate this most pivotal moment in history. Look deeper into the life and birth of Christ and gain insight into your own journey with the Lord, as you follow in the sacred footsteps of Mary, Joseph and others on the journey to Bethlehem.

Stewardship & Finance
How does it feel to believe in a fearless, generous God?

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly
far more than all we can ask or imagine,
to him be the glory in the church
and in Christ Jesus to all generations,
forever and ever. Amen
Ephesians 3:20-21 (NRSV)

We invite you to join with Pastor Michael and your Stewardship & Finance Team, discovering "Fearless Generosity." We will spend the month of October and the first part of November learning how we as individuals and as Slash Church are called to live, serve, sow, and give fearlessly and faithfully.

You will soon be receiving a covenant card from our team. Please prayerfully consider the act of worship through stewardship to God's congregation here at Slash.

We are richly blessed. How does God call us to be Fearlessly Generous?

Prayer:  "Fearless God, your math makes no sense to us. How can one seed grow so much? Help us be fearless in sharing your love and all that you give us with others so that we may watch it grow. Amen." by Erica Kennedy

2014 CROP WALK

CROP WALK -October 4th at 9:00 AM - Carter Park in Ashland

We often take for granted our ability to turn on a faucet to get drinking water or open the refrigerator door to get food to eat.  For many, it is not quite so simple.  Many go days without food and walk miles to get clean water to drink.  Still many others starve to death - children and adults.  Our CROP WALK raises money to feed those starving, provide the knowledge and resources to find ways to sustain life in areas of drought, and bring awareness to others of this need.  It's not too late to sign up now for our CROP WALK Let's make a difference and prevent starvation.  Walk, collect, rock, stroll in our effort to make our community more aware of the extreme hunger that occurs around the world.  Remember that 25% of the monies that we collect go straight to ACES right here in Hanover County.  PLEASE participate in whatever way you wish:  with donations, manning a water station, walking with our teams, or rocking in a rocker.  Checks can be made payable to CWS/CROP.  Let's get out there and make a difference!

SIMPLE SOUP LUNCHEON

WE NEED SOUP - ALL KINDS OF SOUP - Four simple soup luncheon following the 11 am worship service on Sunday, October 5th.   We are looking for some great chefs who would be willing to provide a pot of their favorite soup for our Fellowship Luncheon in remembering those who have so little to eat.  If you are willing to help, would you please let Cathy Tillman know (and then be there to enjoy the different varieties of soup). We are planning on soup, salad and crackers with beverage.  This luncheon is an outreach project continuing to remember those who go hungry every day and is an extension of our CROP WALK.  Please come and share in this simple meal!
