The Slash Report ~ September 2014

Back to Church this Fall!
Slash worship services are awesome, effective, relevant, and God centered with a variety of music styles. Communion is served every Sunday in all of our worship services either by intinction or by passing trays with bread and the cup. Our worship series in September focuses on how God's love changes us and empowers us through our daily lives. People of all ages will find power for living in this worship series. Vacations are ending; school is starting and now is a great time to get back to church and invite your friends to church.
According to Thom Rainer's book, The Unchurched Next Door, "82% of people will come to church if they are invited by a trusted relative or friend." And according to an article in The Washington Times, having an active spiritual life is one of the best ways to accomplish a happier, longer life. The Washington Times article, "Churchgoing correlated to longevity," April 2006, reported that those who attend church regularly tend to live an average of 35 percent longer than those who do not. Other research shows churchgoing adults tend to be more optimistic, less stressed and believe they're making a positive difference in the world.
These are all good reasons for you and your friends to attend Slash Church this fall. Invite a friend to join you at Slash this week.
Sunday September 7 we resume our regular Sunday schedule:
G3nes1s (Genesis) 8:45 am Worship is lead by our minister, worship leader and band.
Fellowship Cafe', 9:30 am is a time of coffee, snack, and community in the Education Building.
Sunday School, 9:45 am small groups and classes for all ages.
11 o'clock worship features hymns with organ and piano and our choir.
I look forward to seeing you Sunday when we continue our focus on John 3:16!

BRING A FRIEND SUNDAY
September 14, 2014 ~ Celebrate Our History
We will celebrate 285 years, Sunday, Sept. 14th in worship. Our white weather boarded building has survived the test of time serving as a Christian place of worship since 1729. We are delighted to be a part of the many congregations who have filled this church with praise for our Lord and Savior. After each service we will serve Birthday Cake to commemorate the day. Please invite your friends and any past members to join us for this memorable day in the life of our church.

Relay for Life 2014 Update
It was a BEAUTIFUL day at Camp Wilderness in Doswell for our Relay for Life walk on June 21st. Our Slash Church team earned the Silver Award for donations and had a great turnout and wonderful support this year. As a matter of fact, we collected donations of $3,674.00 which I believe is the best year yet! Thank you to our team members, those who supported those walkers, and those who joined us during our fellowship meal. If we continue to fight this battle, HOPE will not be a word without meaning. Through our support, we are able to provide help to those with cancer, to further research, to hopefully make cancer a symbol of the past. Thank you so very much!

2014 CROP WALK
CROP WALK - October 4th at 9:00 AM - Carter Park in Ashland
Sign up now for our CROP WALK for 2014 to be held on Saturday October 4th with registration at 8:30 AM, and the walk beginning at 9:00 AM. There will be several churches participating in this year's walk. Click here to go to the on-line link for the Crop Walk and you can sign up and collect donations as well.
Donate to a walker on line or sign up where you see Slash Christian Church as a team to join. Let's make a difference and prevent starvation. Walk, collect, rock, stroll in our effort to make our community more aware of the extreme hunger that occurs around the world. Your donations do not just go to provide food to the hungry, but also to provide the knowledge and tools in order to help prevent hunger by growing foods in harsh environments. Remember also that 25% of the monies that we collect go straight to ACES right here in Hanover County. This is a time of awareness, fellowship, and it provides for a healthy walk in the process. Collection envelopes are available from Cathy Tillman. PLEASE participate in whatever way you wish: with donations, manning a water station, walking with our teams, or rocking in a rocker. Remember that many companies also offer corporate matches for an employee's donation. This is a quick and easy way to collect money. Checks can be made payable to CWS/CROP. Let's get out there and make a difference!
ACES Food Drive
In conjunction with the CROP WALK this year, we are holding a major non-perishable food drive/hygiene items for ACES. As always the following items are in constant need: beef stew, rice, cereals, canned soups with meat, powdered milk, boxes of macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, toilet tissue, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes. So pick up your grocery bag to fill on September 28th and bring it back to church on October 5th. There will be a simple soup and salad luncheon following worship on October 5th for all to attend as well.
And speaking of the Soup Luncheon, we are looking for some great chefs to bring in their favorite pot of soup on October 5th. If you would be willing to provide a pot of your delicious soup, please let Cathy Tillman know. We are planning on soup, salad and crackers with beverage.

Brunswick Stew
The Clay Springs Ruritans will be having their annual Brunswick Stew cooking on October 18th here at Slash. So remember that you can purchase a quart (or more) of stew for those cool winter days from any member of the Ruritan Club. The proceeds from the sale go to provide scholarships for high school seniors. Thank you for helping us in this endeavor.

You don't want to miss the Fall Festival: October 26th
Mark your calendars for the Fall festival which will be held at Slash Christian Church on Sunday, October 26th at 4:30 p.m. The Membership Committee will provide hot dogs and buns, chips, sodas, hot cider and hot chocolate. Guests are asked to bring either two side dishes or one side dish and a dessert.
Dress up for the occasion and you could take a prize home for best costume.
Please no scary costumes.
We will need lots of vehicles decorated for Trunk or Treat with prizes given for the top three winners. The very popular Scavenger Hunt will be back, so wear your running shoes and put on your thinking caps. You could be on the team that takes the prize for being the fastest to solve the riddle. There will also be games for the children and a cupcake walk. If you are able to provide cupcakes, bring them on the 26th. Invite your friends and family. Come and have a great time of fun, fellowship and great food!

ASHLAND CHRISTIAN EMERGENCY SERVICES
Adults:
undergarments - all sizes; tennis shoes - all sizes
Children's:
tennis shoes - all sizes; winter pajamas - all sizes
Food:
potatoes, rice, oatmeal
Brunswick stew, beef stew, Spaghetti sauce, soups
Hamburger helper - or similar boxed dinners
Baked beans, pork and beans
Canned vegetables - with the exception of corn and green beans, canned fruit
Our food pantry is lower than it has been in a long time. The Boy Scouts usually give us a substantial food donation in November, but until then we are concerned that we will continue to struggle. On numerous occasions this summer we have had to purchase groceries in order to supply our clients with the very basics. Considering that we only give groceries to a client every 60 days, we would certainly prefer to do more. Please let your congregation know that our need for food items is greater than usual and we would greatly appreciate anything they could donate. The list above is the greatest need, but any food item and any toiletries (toilet paper, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.
