The Slash Report ~ June 2014
|

Do you ever feel unsure where you are going on life's journey? Sometimes we just need a little light on the path in order to find our way.
In other words, many of us want God to guide our path.
I think we are all familiar with this passage:
"Your Word is a Lamp to my feet and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105
We know it from the older translation and song as, "Thy Word."
As I was planning for this worship series, I wondered how does a person really know when God is guiding their steps on the journey of life? Together we will try to answer that important question in our worship in June.
The A Light to My Path series will cover some key ingredients to finding your path. First, God has provided a guide book, the Bible, to help steer us on the Journey of Faith. This month we will explore how the Bible guides our lives and we will seek to understand how our baptism and celebration at the Lord's Table each week help us find and stay on the path. The Holy Spirit also plays a big role in helping us interpret and understand God's will for our lives.
SPECIAL SUNDAYS IN JUNE
- June 8th we will celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost and recognize and honor our graduate and present scholarships to our current students. We will also commission the IMPACT Youth who will leave on their Mission Trip June 29th.
- June 15th we will celebrate the men in our community on Father's Day and Commission our summer campers.
- June 25th our children will lead us in ONE Worship, 11 am. They will show us how Jesus' love is one of kind when they present our worship culminating their Weird Animal Bible School.
The office will be closed June 23 - June 27. If you need pastoral care please contact the Elder of the Month, Carol Payne or Cathy Tillman, Board Moderator.

Pentecost Special Offering
June 1st & 8th:

"Just imagine what your life would be like if no one answered God's call to start your church. Do you know that more than two-thirds of the United States population doesn't live within close driving distance of a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregation? Because of the new church movement, Disciples have made great strides in correcting that sobering statistic. Disciples have started 830 churches since 2001, reaching more than 50,000 individuals who may not have had a relationship with God. Our new churches worship in at least 19 different languages.
Just as our ancestors started new churches, consider how you can support the creation of new churches in places that do not currently have a Disciples church witness. One important way that you can support this effort is through your generous gifts to the Pentecost Offering. By supporting the Pentecost Offering, you are making it possible for the Church to recruit, assess, train and coach new church planters. One half of the Offering collected stays in your Region and the other half goes to Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation to support their new church ministry work.
This year's Pentecost Offering will be taken on Sundays, June 1 and June 8. We give praise to God for the sacrifices of generations before us - the new churches that were started by courageous, visionary leaders. As a member of a Disciples church that was new once, will you consider participating in this offering so other churches can experience new life?"

MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Relay for Life Walk - Saturday June 21st - 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM
Kings Dominion Camp Wilderness in Doswell, VA

We are fighting to prevent the suffering - to help find the cure. The 2014 Western Hanover Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, June 21st starting at 10:00 AM and going until 10:00 PM at Kings Dominion Camp Wilderness in Doswell, VA . Join our team or support someone who is a part of our Slash Church team by purchasing a luminaria or donating to a team member. Check out our Thermometer and help us reach the top! Help fill the plastic water bottle with dimes. Click here for our Relay for Life on-line link
The campground will provide plenty of tree shade and walking paths are through the trees as well. As in years past, we will have a fellowship meal for those attending at 5:00 PM. If you wish to help provide a dish or snacks, please let Cathy Tillman know. In the evening, you will be able to view the Kings Dominion fireworks. But most of all - let's help find a cure. Let's walk in memory of those we have lost to cancer. Let's provide hope and support to those still battling cancer. We can make a difference!
There is no registration fee for cancer survivors and we want to see you there as we celebrate your birthdays. So please let any member of the Outreach Committee know that you will be there for any part of that day - helping us to celebrate your birthdays.
